South Korean land is mostly mountainous which is not suitable for agriculture. Lowlands in west and south east account for only 30%. Approximately 3000 islands lie on the off the western and southern coasts of the country. Rice paddy fields are converted to irrigated lands but with less facilities still developed and water scarcity affected the yield as the reservoirs do not function well. The government of South Korea has brought about new farming policies and programmes in lieu of increasing water scarcity crisis. The government is expected to build large smart complexes to encourage young populace of the country to pursue farming. It is also expected to build four valleys by 2022 to support agriculture. It will include training centres, testing centres and farming sites.

Drip irrigation is used more by farmers in China and India for cultivation of plantation crops like tea, tobacco, cotton, sugarcane and other crops. With the adoption of micro irrigation systems China has become world leader in production of crops and exporter to world countries. South Korea is increasingly adopting new farming techniques and micro irrigation is also widely used in this country. Wide scale cultivation of plantation crops has led to rise in micro irrigation systems market in APAC region. The market is estimated to witness substantial growth in the near future with governments’ thrust on augmenting the penetration of water conservation and efficiency driven by the micro-irrigation system.

The farmers here lack basic knowledge on micro irrigation systems as they are generally not educated. India is one of the major tobacco growing countries of the world. According to a research study, 20% saving in fertilizer use can be achieved with fertigation in seedbeds. In the field trials on FCV tobacco in NLS, a saving of 50% of irrigation water and 25% improvement in tobacco yield were recorded with drip irrigation. While fertigation with 100% recommended fertilizer dose increased the tobacco yield by 45% and fertigation with 80% recommended fertilizer dose increased the yield by 36%. China has 3 times the irrigated land than USA and requires water accordingly. In 2020, China had 69.16 million hectors of land irrigated and main crops grown were tea, cotton. China ranks first in water saving technologies globally with 65% in 2020 and expected to be about 78% by 2030.

In areas of northern China, where per capita water availability is one-tenth the world average, water use exceeds supply and there are ample signs of diminishing water resources such as falling water tables and receding surface-water supplies. Since two-thirds of China's water goes to irrigation rather than to industrial or domestic use, water deliveries to agriculture limit the amount available for other uses when water becomes scarce. Industrial and domestic use can also affect agriculture: the discharge of untreated wastewater into surface-water systems can decrease the quality of water used in irrigation. To resolve these and other disputes, policy reforms to unify water management institutions around urban areas are being promoted.
