The Vietnam Telecom Market is anticipated to grow at a high CAGR during the forecast period, owing to the rising demand for high-speed internet connectivity and increasing smartphone penetration in the country.

Telecommunications, also referred to as telecom, is the electronic transfer of information over great distances, including voice, data, and video. This is a broad phrase that covers a variety of information-transmitting technologies and communications infrastructures, including telegraphs, wired phones, mobile phones, satellites, microwave communications, fiber optics, and radio and television broadcasts.

Two stations, each with a transmitter and a receiver, make up a full, single communications circuit. Any station's transmitter and receiver could be combined into a single gadget known as a transceiver. Electrical wire or cable, commonly known as copper, optical fiber, electromagnetic fields, or light can be used as the signal transmission medium.

Rising Demand for OTT Services

According to the GroupM Vietnam survey, in 2020, YouTube held a 46% market share as the top OTT streaming service provider in rural Vietnam. With 27% of respondents utilizing it, FPT Play, which is a regional platform, was the second-most popular OTT service in the country. This suggests that with a gradual loss in DTH subscribers and the emergence of competition from OTT service providers, Pay-Tv service income is anticipated to decline over the next five years.

The demand for OTT services is likely to rise considerably in the near future as more people subscribe to mobile devices. As an illustration, DatVietVAC introduces VieON, a video-on-demand and television service, in Vietnam. Consumers can have access to on-demand video services from international OTT platforms, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, which opens up new growth potential for OTT service providers in Vietnam.

Vietnam was placed 53rd with a median mobile download speed of 39.48 Mbps in October 2022, according to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index. Customers are switching to mobile-based OTT services, which is opening new revenue streams for the telecom industry. In the country, the mobile internet user base increased from 27% of the population in 2014 to 53% in 2022, according to GSMA. Vietnamese adults are using mobile internet more and more, which is likely to fuel the demand for OTT services even more in the coming years.

Growing Demand for Wireless Services

The Vietnam telecom market has extended as a result of the expanding take-up of smartphone administrations, made strides communication administrations, and the developing populace. Controlling bodies, which are imperative within the country's adoption of a 5G organize, would advance encourage the rise. The government has ambitious plans to upgrade from 3G and 4G to 5G networks for its network coverage. For instance, in 2021, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) claimed to complete the installation of 5G stations with download and upload speeds of 900 Mbps and 60 Mbps using open radio access network (ORAN) technology.

By the end of 2023, the Vietnamese government intends to grant licenses for 5G wireless services to distributers. Wi-Fi deployment will become increasingly popular in the near future, opening new business opportunities for the telecom industry. Vietnam was rated 47th with a median fixed broadband download speed of 78.87 Mbps in October 2022, according to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index. The prevalence of smartphones is considerably rising, which is driving the demand for high-speed wireless services.

The government and private telecom service providers are collaborating to increase wireless broadband connections. For instance, the government wants to provide consumers with quicker and higher-quality wireless internet services as part of its National Digital Transformation Program.

5G Rollout Plan

According to experts cited by the National Institute of Information and Communications Strategy, the development of 5G can raise businesses' labor productivity and operational efficiency, which will boost economic growth in Vietnam over the next few years. 40 of Vietnam's 63 provinces and cities have had 5G network coverage since the pilot commercialization of 5G in December 2020.

British data company, predicts that 5G will have a significant impact on the world economy, potentially generating up to USD 13.1 trillion in revenue and USD 22.3 million in new employment worldwide by 2035. Users should be able to learn, buy, and work in the least amount of time thanks to 5G. 5G download rates are 100 times faster than 4G and potentially reach 10 gigabits per second under the right circumstances.

According to tests conducted by French cyber firm Thales Group, 5G download speeds can reach 75 Mbps, allowing for the 49-second download of a movie. This takes about 50 minutes on the 4G network. In addition to boosting cell phone bandwidth, the development of 5G also offers high-speed wireless connectivity for a variety of sectors and businesses, particularly automated and robotic manufacturing lines.

In addition to simulating the operation of a manufacturing facility, 5G can give the corporation a system to track its goods and raw materials in real-time throughout production. In Vietnam, 5G technology has the potential to positively influence several industries and sectors that are important to the country.

After Q3 of 2022, Vietnam had the tenth-most 5G-connected devices worldwide, according to the Internet data analysis website Speedtest.net. The United States, China, Brazil, Germany, and Japan are the top five nations on the list. Thailand and the Philippines are the other two Southeast Asian countries on the list.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers the fastest 5G connection speed in Vietnam, with a download speed of 286.77 Mbps and an upload speed of 41.34 Mbps. Fast connection speeds are also available on the Apple iPhone 12 and 13 models. 5G has been tested in 55 of the nation's 63 provinces and cities, according to Nguyen Phong Nha, deputy director of the Ministry of Information and Communications' Telecommunications Authority. The government has also asked businesses to create end products to expand 5G network coverage.
