  • Despite being a cash-dominated society, COVID-19 has resulted in a significant shift in consumer preference towards cashless methods of payment in Austria. In March 2023, Mastercard partnered with Austrian Bundesliga football club LASK to launch a cashless payment solution in LASK Raiffeisen Arena, allowing fans to make payments using cards, smartphones, and wearables. Similar solutions had previously been rolled out by Mastercard in the stadiums of Red Bull Salzburg and FK Austria Vienna
  • In addition to traditional card issuers, digital-only banks are making their mark in the country's payment card space. In October 2021, UK-based fintech company Revolut started operating as a bank in Austria. The company offers a wide range of products and services, including euro-denominated bank accounts, debit cards, and P2P payments. It also offers the < 18 bank account for children aged six to 17, which includes a debit card. The customer's parents or guardians can keep track of their child's spending and saving via the app
  • Alternative payment solutions are being introduced in Austria. RaiPay is a mobile wallet launched by Raiffeisen Bank in Austria in March 2023. The solution enables users to make contactless payments using mobile devices. The solution also allows users to make P2P fund transfers as well as cardless cash withdrawals from contactless-enabled ATMs. Users can make payments at stores by waiving their NFC-enabled phone over a contactless POS terminal. The service is only available for Raiffeisen Bank card holders
