The spinal imaging treatment market is expected to register a CAGR of nearly 5.2% over the forecast period.

The Covid-19 pandemic had affected the demand for spinal imaging market in 2020. During the early pandemic, due to the lockdown restrictions, suspension of non-urgent scheduled visits and hospitalizations, and stringent social distancing norms, the demand for spinal imaging had reduced . For instance, according to the research study “Impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic on Imaging Case Volumes’ published in May 2020 reported that the total imaging volume in 2020 (weeks 1-16) declined by 12.29% compared with 2019. Additionally, post-COVID-19 (weeks 10-16) observed a greater decrease (28.10%) in imaging volumes across all patient service locations. However, owing to the large-scale vaccination programs conducted around the world, the studied market is expected to regain its demand over the coming years.

Certain factors that are driving the market growth include the rising global burden of spinal disorders, the rising prevalence of spinal disorders, such as herniated disc, spinal stenosis, cauda equina syndrome, and radiculopathy, are expected to drive the growth of the market. Developing patient’s accessibility to medical imaging services, and the growing procedural volume of spinal surgeries are further expected to boost the market growth. Moreover, it is estimated that 80% of the world’s population is subjected to back pain at least once in their lifetime. Thus, the rising number of the target population is expected to boost the growth of the market. Changes in the lifestyle and number of geriatric population also projected to boost the demand for spinal imaging market. The increasing number of healthcare projects and rising need for replacement of imaging equipment in developed countries are expected to further propel the market growth.

Key Market Trends

MRI Segment is expected to dominate the market over the forecast period

MRI segment held the largest market share in the spinal imaging market. MRI offers high soft-tissue contrast, excellent spatial resolution coupled with multiplanar imaging capabilities which helps in spinal investigations. In advanced MRI scanners they have elevated magnetic strength (3.0T) and less signal to noise ratio (SNR) which decreased the imaging time, thereby improving patient compliance and installation rate.

The advancement in development of software for MRI images help to boost the demand of MRI imaging. In May 2021, Indian Radiology company Synapsica had partnered with Aarthi Scans and Labs to deploy its artificial intelligence (AI) assistant named ‘Spindle’ to offer spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) for the diagnostic chain. Spindle automatically reports over 35 degenerative or age-related pathologies in MRI scans of the spine. This helps reduce the time spent by radiologists on spine MRIs by almost 70% and also quickly identify and report variations and pathologies to diagnose the disease as well as quantify the degree of degeneration.

North America is Expected to Have the Significant Market Share

North America holds the major market share and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period due to high product demand and rising cases of vertebral surgeries like lumbar discectomy and lumbar fusion . This is attributed primarily to the advancements in healthcare technologies, credited to extensive investment-backed R&D, and availability of a rising number of X-ray and CT devices which are used to diagnose any kind of compressions or inflammation of spinal cord and nerves, infection of the vertebrae, discs, spinal cord or tumors in the spinal cord or surrounding areas.

In November 2020, Siemens Healthineers introduces the LUMINOS Lotus Max in Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). It is 2-in-1 remote-controlled imaging system that seamlessly integrates fluoroscopy and radiography for increased productivity and optimized clinical operations. It also helped in full-spine examinations and basic interventions. Such advancement in the region is expected to boost the market growth in North American region.

Competitive Landscape

The spinal imaging market is moderately competitive and consists of moderate number of major players. In recent times, there is emergence of mid-size to smaller companies who are focusing on introduction of new technologies. Companies, like Bruker, Canon Medical Systems Corp., Fujifilm Medical Systems, and GE Healthcare hold a substantial market share in the spinal imaging market. Additionally, the key players involved are Koninklijke Philips N.V, Siemens Healthineers, Mediso Ltd, Hitachi, Ltd.
