In North America, Mexico is the leader in smart meter production and its 79% is exported to American countries, but its penetration on home ground remains low. However, with the smart city development programmes entrusted by the government, Mexico is slowly moving towards clean energy goals. This will enable urban development, mobility, and safety through effective data collection, analysis, and block chain. A smart city is an interconnected system with new technologies to manage public transportation and efficient use of energy and water resources. In today’s fast adapting, technology-savvy young populace, it is not alien and leads to the digital transformation of the city. Mexico is not 100% smart but has 4 declared smart cities by the Inter-American Development Bank. These are Maderas in Queretaro, Ciudad Creativa and Tequila in Jalisco, and Smart Puebla as intelligent zones.

According to the report title “Mexico Smart Meter (Gas, Electricity & Water) Market Overview, 2027” the smart meter market in Mexico is expected to grow by over 6% during the forecast period ending in 2027. Historically, the market grew by 34%, which is slower than some other countries in North America. Electric smart meters have nearly 60% of installations in Mexico, and smart water meters are the fastest growing type, at a growth rate of 9% over the forecast period. Smart gas meters are still in their infancy in Mexico as the utilities are not yet prepared for their mass deployment. AMR meters have more than a 35% market share in Mexico as the second generation metering is being deployed at a slow rate. Despite the fact that Mexico manufactures a large number of smart metres for export to the United States, its own consumption remains quite low.In Mexico, commercial users account for less than 20% of the market, while industrial users have a negligible market share.Residential users are large-scale users of smart electric meters as they have the first mover advantage in the market. It is estimated that at the end of 2020, almost 17 Million smart meters will be installed in Mexico.

Smart metering and smart grid network development go hand in hand, and as either one is always evolving, it pushes the other to grow further. This offers utilities and consumers the ability to better control and monitor the use of resources. The Internet of Things (IoT) offers greater connectivity for energy management. There are multiple ways in which smart meters connect to the central database. The connection can be achieved through cellular networks, pager networks, PLC, Wi-Fi, and mesh networking. Today, the type of networks used varies across all types of environments, and there doesn't seem to be an optimal way in which the power company can connect to its meters. The different types of connections perform better or worse depending on the type of environment (i.e., urban, suburban, or rural). Smart meters often replace previously installed but not connected utility-monitoring devices (unless being installed in a new building) and are connected to the entity's existing utility lines. Previously, when using no connected energy meters, a worker from the power company, often referred to as a meter reader, would have to come to a particular building and look at the meter to check usage. This could be a tedious process and result in incorrect billing because of human error or the need for estimated billings rather than actual billings if a meter reader could not get to a given meter in a certain timeframe.

CFE is Mexico’s single electric utility provider, servicing nearly 34 million customers countrywide. TWACS technology is being deployed as part of CFE’s AMI project in Mexico. It is an expanded deployment of pole-mounted and socket-type TWACS AMI solutions in Acapulco, an important seaport served by CFE’s South Central division to support the utility’s AMI project. A key feature of this AMI implementation is the installation of in-home displays that will allow CFE to enhance its customer service through improved communications. The TWACS system is a proven fixed network solution that uses patented technology to transmit data over power lines. TWACS offers two-way communication to electric meters and provides timely and accurate billing information, load control, demand response, and outage detection and assessment. With this system, utilities can effectively manage customer data and reduce costs while enabling innovation and providing superior customer service.

The hard water, debris, and wear and tear of mechanical meters degrade the accuracy of conventional meters over a period of time. The volume of water loss apparently increases, causing the utility to lose billable water revenue. Utilities are beginning to realize the benefits of water loss caused by municipalities on a daily basis. It wastes money, causes extensive infrastructure damage and depletes natural resources. Smart water meters can help governments to minimize water loss, increase billable revenues, decrease operational costs and maintenance expenses, and create a healthier, greener environment. All these factors are causing smart water meter technology to grow rapidly over the forecast period in Mexico.

The approach of the report

This report consists of a combined approach of primary as well as secondary research. Initially, secondary research was used to get an understanding of the market and listing out the companies that are present in the market. The secondary research consists of third party sources such as press releases, annual report of companies, analyzing the government generated reports and databases. After gathering the data from secondary sources primary research was conducted by making telephonic interviews with the leading players about how the market is functioning and then conducted trade calls with dealers and distributors of the market. Post this we have started doing primary calls to consumers by equally segmenting consumers in regional aspects, tier aspects, age group, and gender. Once we have primary data with us we have started verifying the details obtained from secondary sources.
