Micro irrigation, or the modern method of irrigation, is a method in which we deliver water slowly and in the form of distinct droplets, continuous drops, streams, etc. The micro-irrigation system is most favoured these days for its low cost and water-efficiency. Micro irrigation is important on farms because it can increase yields while reducing water, fertilizer, and labour requirements. By applying water directly to the root zone, the activity reduces loss of water through carriage, run-off, deep percolation, and evaporation. Micro irrigation has two categories, namely drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation. Drip irrigation is one of the most common methods used on US farms. Drip irrigation works by involving and placing tubing with emitters on the ground alongside the plants.

The emitters slowly drip water into the soil at the root zone. Plant productivity and quality improve because humidity levels are kept at an ideal range, whereas the sprinkler system works as a natural rainfall. Water is dispersed through a system of pipes, usually by pumping. It is then sprayed into the air through sprinklers so that it breaks up into small water drops which fall to the ground.

According to the report titled, US Micro Irrigation System Market Overview, 2027, the US micro irrigation market is expected to grow in the upcoming forecast period at a CAGR of more than 6%. The US market by type is building up with the contribution of drip irrigation systems and sprinkler irrigation systems. Amongst these, the drip irrigation system is one of the fastest growing systems, with a compound annual growth rate of around 3% greater than the estimated CAGR of other micro-irrigation systems. More than 5 thousand acres of land are drip irrigated among the land of around 63 thousand irrigated acres. The drip irrigation helps the farmers to earn the maximum financial savings and also leads to greater revenue.

The market for orchards and vineyards is expected to grow in the future because the compound annual growth rate is expected to be higher than other crops. There are more than 10,000 vineyards in the US that are producing wine. In the United States, wine was sold for more than 450 million dollars. Orchards and vineyards are expected to grow at a CAGR of over 6%, followed by the plantation crops, which are gaining ground amongst the four types. Plantation crops like tea are considered the drivers of the market. The United States exports more than $80 million in tea each year, and more than 140 million Americans drink tea every day.

By end user type, amongst all the end users, the market size of farmers is stated to be the highest amongst all the stated examined factors. Farmers are considered to be the major source of every country's getting its agricultural crops. Farmers have only one source of income for their living, which they consider to be the growing of crops. The most common and suitable type of irrigation system used by farmers is surface irrigation with basins, which is the most suitable method for row crops. Therefore, the market size for farmers is entitled to be the highest in terms of compound annual growth rate, which is around 6%. Farmers use micro irrigation on more than 800 million acres to grow the required crops in the US. The majority of the farms in the US are owner-operated.

The pandemic had a major impact on the micro irrigation systems market and on farmers as well, as agriculture was the farmers' sole source of income. They were given freedom to work so that the country could get the essential and basic agricultural crops. The pandemic's effects were disruptive on the US agricultural system and were broad and varied. The consequences of the crisis for farmers and their families were immediate and severe. That is, farming experienced disruptions to production because of the lower availability of labour and other inputs, and output prices were affected by changes in demand for commodities in certain market segments.
