Cooling towers are used in water or liquid-cooled chillers, which improves their thermodynamic performance in contrast to air-cooled chillers. This is because heat is discarded at or near the wet-bulb temperature of the air, rather than the higher, often much higher, dry-bulb temperature. Evaporatively cooled chillers are more efficient than air-cooled chillers, but not as efficient as liquid-cooled chillers. Liquid-cooled chillers are primarily designed for interior deployment and operation and are refrigerated by a separate condenser water loop and then connected to exterior cooling towers to discharge heat into the atmosphere.

In air conditioning systems, chilled coolant from a chiller in an air-cooling plant or conditioning is commonly supplied to heat converters, or coils, inside air controllers, or other types of terminal devices, which chill the air in their respective spaces. The water is then recirculated and chilled in the chiller. These cooling coils transmit latent and sensible heat from the air to chilled water, chilling and dehumidifying the airflow in the process. A common air conditioning chiller is rated between 50 kW (170,000 BTU/h) and 7 MW (24 million BTU/h), with various manufacturers producing chillers with cooling capacities of up to 21 MW (72 million BTU/h).

Depending on the application, chilled water temperatures typically range from 1 to 7 °C (34 to 45 °F). Chillers usually take water that is 12°C and cool it to 7°C. Emergency chillers can be used to deliver chilled water when air conditioning chillers are not working or are needed to be repaired or replaced. Rental chillers are put on a trailer and transported to the job site fast. To connect air conditioning systems and rental chillers, large chilled water lines are employed.
