In digital thermometers, the resistor changes with temperature. By a pyroelectric sensor, which is made of pyroelectric film and electronics, an electrical charge is produced when a temperature change occurs in a container filled with dry air or nitrogen. Digital thermometers measure radiation from the forehead or ear's tympanic membrane. Core temperature is controlled for homeostasis.

The hypothalamus triggers an appropriate autonomic response, such as sweating or shivering, if the vasomotor response is incapable of maintaining a steady core temperature. Sweating causes heat loss by evaporation, while shivering causes heat production, depending on the temperature.
