For an aircraft to operate in specific high-level airspace, its ANP must be lower than its RNP.

The FMS determines the course using the flight plan as well as the aircraft's position. This path can be followed manually by the pilot, or the autopilot can be programmed to do so. For lateral flight plans, the FMS mode is typically referred to as LNAV or Lateral Navigation, and for vertical flight plans, VNAV, or Vertical Navigation. While LNAV gives the autopilot roll steering instructions, VNAV provides targets for speed, pitch, or altitude.
