In general, simulation is a process of studying a complex system using its mathematical representation (a model). Simulation is a methodology of choice for situations that are too complex, dangerous, or not suitable for performing actual experimentation or physical manipulations.

The focus of this webinar is a simulation of healthcare business operations aimed at optimal staffing and scheduling and resource utilization in a highly variable environment typical for healthcare settings.

Why you should Attend:

While one could find rich literature on various aspects of discrete event simulation (DES) for staffing, scheduling, and resource utilization, it is typically presented in a format that is difficult to use or replicate by a layman.

One should attend this webinar because it is focused on examples from real hospital practice. All presented examples are illustrated using the powerful DES software ProcessModel by the instructor with years of hospital experience as a lead simulation consultant. His experience, in particular with DES, was presented in his widely cited book with more than 10,000 sales worldwide: Kolker, A., `Healthcare Management Engineering: What does this fancy word really mean?` SpringerBriefs, NY, 2012.

This book was used as the main text for the training course by the National Health System, the UK, as well as by the Lubar School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the graduate course on Healthcare delivery systems and data analytics.

Areas Covered in the Session:

  • Scheduling order of appointments with different duration variability
  • Is 30 min +60 min always equal to 60 min +30 min?
  • Centralized discharge vs individual unit discharge
  • Staffing of the hospital receiving center
  • Staffing of the unit with cross-trained staff
  • Outpatient clinic cost and staffing: Is the right staff used at the right time?
  • Optimal staffing for improving Eye Institute performance: Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India

Speaker

Alexander Kolker holds a Ph.D. in applied mathematics. He is an expert in advanced data analytics for operations management, computer simulation, and staffing optimization with the main focus on healthcare applications.
