Reflection is the primary method of EMI shielding, which attenuates the electrical component of EMI. To accomplish EMI reflection, the material must contain mobile charge carriers. This interaction induces the movement and redistribution of charges along the conductor, producing an opposite electromagnetic field. The external magnetic field is canceled out by the electromagnetic field produced by the redistribution of charges. In this mechanism, the stronger the shielding qualities, the greater the conductivity of the material.

This is the secondary EMI shielding mechanism that acts on the EMI's magnetic component. To absorb EMI, the material must possess both magnetic and electric dipoles. These substances have a high dielectric constant and magnetic permeability. In the presence of a magnetized field, magnetic field lines tend to go through the material and are therefore severed. This characteristic allows an enclosure to absorb magnetic and electric field lines by establishing a route within itself.

Induced currents contribute to the absorption mechanism by diminishing the incoming electromagnetic wave. This occurs when the electromagnetic wave oscillates at a high frequency, inducing currents in the conductor. The magnetic field created by static electricity opposes the external magnetic field. Stronger turbulence currents are generated by substances with high electrical conductivity.
