On average, manufacturing in the European Union shrank by over 7%. In the Netherlands, almost all branches of manufacturing contracted in 2020, whereas several branches showed growth in 2019. The transport equipment and textile, clothing, and footwear industries recorded the largest decline.
  • In 2021, Overijssel had the largest number of dairy farms in the Netherlands, i.e., over 2,700 dairy farms. In Zeeland, there were only 195 dairy farms in 2021. Despite having the highest number of dairy farms, Overijssel did not have the highest number of dairy cows. In 2020, Friesland had nearly 300,000 dairy cows compared to 250,000 in Overijssel.
  • As of 2022, there were roughly 80,000 online stores and mail-order companies in the Netherlands. The number of webshops and mail-order companies in the Netherlands has increased substantially over the years. In 2022, there were more than 18,000 online shops and mail-order companies in the clothing segment in the Netherlands. This number has steadily increased over the years, making online fashion the biggest branch of webshops in the country. The share of consumers aged 16 to 75 years who purchased fashion or sports goods online in the Netherlands was 62% in 2019, only second in the EU-28 behind the United Kingdom (67%).
