The global microdermabrasion devices market accounted for $333.78 million in 2021, and is expected to reach $882.08 million by 2031, registering a CAGR of 10.2% from 2022 to 2031.

Microdermabrasion (MDA) is a non-invasive epidermal resurfacing procedure used to treat uneven skin tone/texture, photoaging, striae, melasma, and scars, including acne scars. It is widely available and one of the most common nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the U. S. MDA was first introduced in 1985 by Marini and Lo Brutto as a less aggressive alternative to chemical peels and dermabrasion. The MDA procedure can be performed in the outpatient setting (medical office or medical spa) by a trained clinician, aesthetician, medical assistant, or nurses without the use of anesthesia.

During the procedure, abrasive crystals are propelled against skin under the control of a handheld vacuum system. Crystals cause gentle mechanical abrasion to the skin, which ultimately removes stratum corneum layer of the epidermis. As part of the wound healing process, new epidermis forms with enhanced cosmesis. The technique is considered safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types and complications are minimal. In addition to cosmetic benefits of MDA, studies have also shown improved skin permeability and enhanced delivery of transdermal medications dosed on an area of the skin treated with MDA.

The microdermabrasion devices market is expected to experience significant market growth during the forecast period, owing to rise in skin-related conditions, increased consumer disposable income, and global acceptance of non-invasive procedures for skin beautification. In addition, growing geriatric population, advanced microdermabrasion devices, and increase in growth of the dermatology industry further facilitates growth of the market. However, reimbursement issues and clinical risk and complications associated with dermatology procedures are expected to impede the market growth. In contrast, rise in demand in emerging markets, increase in R&D activities to develop new dermatological products and surge in healthcare spending are anticipated to provide significant growth opportunities for the microdermabrasion devices market.

The microdermabrasion devices market is segmented on the basis of type, application, end user, and region. On the basis of type, the market is bifurcated into diamond microdermabrasion devices and crystal microdermabrasion devices. Depending on application, it is classified into acne & scars, photo damage, anti-ageing, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and others. By end user, it is classified into hospitals & dermatology clinics, spas & beauty centers, and home use.

Executive Summary

According to this report, titled, 'Microdermabrasion Devices Market,' The microdermabrasion devices market was valued at $333.78 million in 2021, and is estimated to reach $882.1 million by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 10.2% from 2022 to 2031.

Microdermabrasion (MDA) is a non-invasive epidermal resurfacing technique used to repair scars from acne as well as photoaging, striae, and melasma. it is widely available and one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatments carried out in the US. In addition to its cosmetic effects MDA has shown better skin permeability and enhanced distribution of transdermal drugs dosed on a treated area of skin. Crystal microdermabrasion and diamond microdermabrasion are the two basic types of microdermabrasion. They both provide comparable advantages, although their respective processes differ just a little. These tools are simple to use and provide complete patient safety during treatments. A qualified clinician, aesthetician, medical assistant, or nurse can carry out the MDA procedure in an outpatient setting (medical office, medical spa) without the use of anesthesia.

Major factors driving the growth of the microdermabrasion device market include advancement in technology and ensuring maximum patient convenience after and during therapy. In addition, rise in demand for aesthetic procedures, quick adaptability to advanced technology, and the presence of favorable healthcare infrastructure are fueling the growth of the market. Moreover, rise in demand for aesthetic procedures treatment devices as well as aesthetic lasers and cosmetic dermatology which further drive the growth of the market. For instance, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there were over 15,595,955 surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed in the US till 2020. Surgical procedures accounted for 13.6% of the total number of procedures performed, with non-surgical procedures making up 87.4% of the total number of procedures. This represented a 15% decrease in the number of aesthetic procedures performed in the US from 2019 to 2020. Moreover, in 2000, there were nearly 6,748,610 cosmetic procedures (surgical and non-surgical) performed in the US. Moreover, increase in R&D activities to develop new microdermabrasion product and increase in prevalence of skin related disease further boosts the market growth. For instance, according to the National Health Service (NHS), in 2019, it was reported that around 95% of population between the ages of 16 and19 years are diagnosed with acne.
