Trends

Despite the unfavourable economic situation, fresh ground coffee pods continued to be most dynamic within coffee in 2016, registering a 32% increase in retail volume sales which reached 9,100 tonnes. Sales were boosted by frequent discounts offered by manufacturers and retailers, as well as the increasing penetration of pod coffee machines, sales of which grew by 12% in retail volume terms in 2016. Major manufacturers have continued to offer aggressive discounts on combined sales of machines and pods, as well as consistent launches of new flavours and variations.

Competitive Landscape

With a 21% value share, 3 Corações SA remained the leading coffee player in 2016. The company has a strong presence in fresh ground coffee pods (ranking second), is the leading player in standard fresh ground coffee and holds third position in instant coffee in terms of value share. In part, these outstanding positions are the result of constant new product launches, very much in line with what consumers are looking for: eg a lactose-free instant coffee mix (3 Corações Cappuccino Zero Lactose) and Latte pods, sold separately, so that consumers can mix them with any other beverages from the portfolio and create new ones.

Prospects

Coffee is expected to record a 7% CAGR in retail value sales at constant 2016 prices during the forecast period, reaching BRL27.7 billion in 2021. In retail volume terms, product sales are expected to register a 3% CAGR, in line with the review period performance, as penetration is already high throughout all regions of the country. Foodservice volume sales of coffee are set to record a 4% CAGR over the forecast period, with recovery expected from 2018 onwards.
