This technique is effective because it combines supervised learning with a low-resolution LiDAR.

The United States Geological Survey's 3DEP program uses LiDAR technology in mapping activities. 3DEP, which stands for 3D Elevation Program, is a program of the National Map that uses LiDAR mapping to provide the highest standards of elevation maps for the entire country, including the contiguous United States, U.S. territories, and Hawaii. USGS has also employed LiDAR combined with 3DEP to research river scour following significant floods or hurricanes and landslide danger in regions like Pennsylvania.
