In standard VCSELs, the top and lower mirrors are doped with p-type and n-type materials, thereby generating a diode junction. Wafers comprised of gallium arsenide (GaAs) and aluminum gallium arsenide (AlxGa(1-x)As) are frequently used to fabricate VCSELs for wavelengths between 650 nm and 1300 nm.

The GaAs-AlGaAs combination produces VCSELs because the lattice constant of the material does not fluctuate much as the composition is altered, allowing several 'lattice-matched'epitaxial layers to be formed on a GaAs substrate. However, the refractive index of AlGaAs varies quite enormously as the Al fraction increases, reducing the number of layers necessary to construct an efficient Bragg mirror compared to other possible material systems. In addition, at high aluminum concentrations, AlGaAs can create an oxide that can control the current in a VCSEL, hence permitting shallow threshold currents.
