The biodegradable baby diapers market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10.57% during the forecast period to reach US$1,586.112 million by 2028, from US$775.107 million in 2021.

Diapers are one of the most important supplies that parents procure for their babies and are used by them on a daily basis. Unfortunately, conventional single-use diapers are not biodegradable. However, with changes in consumer preferences, the market is witnessing a surge in biodegradable baby diapers. There are several eco-friendly diapers available in the market. To be termed a biodegradable diaper, it must not contain plastic in the liner or filling derived from petrochemical-based polymers (sodium polyacrylate). It must also be made of more natural materials that disintegrate faster than regular diapers.

Rising awareness regarding environmental concerns among parents acts as one of the key factors driving the growth in the biodegradable baby diaper market. Single-use disposable diapers are not biodegradable and take hundreds of years to decompose. Moreover, they are made up of several toxic chemicals such as volatile organic compounds, dioxins, dyes, sodium polyacrylate, tributyl-tin, fragrances, etc that not only negatively impact the health of the environment but also the baby. Some of the other factors fuelling market growth include rising awareness regarding baby hygiene, growing government initiatives, and a rapidly expanding infant population.

However, the lack of knowledge about biodegradable and sustainable baby diapers among parents in emerging economies is restraining the growth of the biodegradable baby diapers market during the forecast period.

Growing awareness regarding environmental concerns among parents.

One of the prime factors boosting the growth of biodegradable baby diapers is the growing number of conscious parents who are concerned about their carbon footprint while raising their children. Conventional, single-use diapers are extremely harmful to the environment as they are not at all biodegradable and take not decades but millennials to disintegrate. They are one of the largest contributors to landfills. According to a report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), disposable diapers account for 2 percent of the U.S.’s landfill waste. Every year, over 20 billion diapers are added to landfills in the United States, resulting in an estimated 3.5 million tonnes of garbage. Plastic diapers contribute a large volume of untreated garbage to landfills each year, which can contaminate groundwater. Biodegradable diaper alternatives are witnessing growth due to their environmentally friendly qualities that attract conscientious parents who are concerned about their carbon impact while raising their children. Therefore, manufacturers in the global biodegradable diapers market are focused on producing products and services using plant-based raw materials that have minimal to negative environmental effects. For instance, in 2022, DYPER's compostable diaper service, REDYPER, allows parents to sign up for regular delivery and collection of biodegradable diapers. After using the diapers, parents simply seal them up and set them outside for pickup (or mail them in, if pickup is not available in their area). The negative impact of chemicals and toxins which are used to manufacture disposable diapers is also leading to a shift towards eco-friendly options.

Growing awareness regarding the health benefits of biodegradable diapers is also fueling growth in the market. Consumers increasingly prefer eco-friendly diapers after discovering the potential of biodegradable diapers in protecting their newborns from rashes while keeping them dry. Disposable diapers with synthetic interferences include several substances that can be harmful to one's health. Other factors such as the rising infant population, growing government initiatives, and expanding women’s workforce are acting are also contributing to demand in the market.

Asia Pacific is anticipated to hold a significant amount of the market share during the forecast period.

Asia Pacific region will hold a significant amount of market share in biodegradable baby diapers. This region will witness high growth during the forecast period owing to increased awareness about the negative impact of synthetic diapers on the environment. The unique properties of biodegradable diapers being environmentally friendly have promoted growth in this region. The rapidly growing infant population and increased female labor-force participation have been important growth drivers for the market in the region. Other factors such as rapid urbanization, lifestyle changes, and a rise in disposable income in countries like India, China, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia have also resulted in the growing demand for biodegradable baby diapers in this region. Moreover, the emergence of new players is also driving the demand.

Market Developments:

  • In March 2020, Kimberly Clark released Huggies Special Delivery diapers made of plant-based materials (* 23% by weight) such as sugarcane, which will provide greater absorbency and fit. The product promises to be paraben, fragrance, and elemental chlorine free.
  • In August 2022, DYPER's launched a compostable diaper service, REDYPER, which allows parents to sign up for regular delivery and collection of biodegradable diapers. After using the diapers, parents simply seal them up and set them outside for pickup (or mail them in, if pickup is not available in their area).
  • In May 2022, SUMO launched a durable fitted cloth baby diaper made from a waterproof cover containing a sewn pocket and washable absorbent pads. They are fully biodegradable and have a reusable diaper system.
