The Spanish construction industry is expected to grow in real terms by 4.5% in 2026, supported by public and private sector investments in energy, industrial and transport infrastructure projects coupled with an increase in the floor area of buildings permits issued. According to Eurostat, the total authorized floor area of the building index grew by 6.3% year on year (YoY) in January 2026, preceded by YoY growth of 4.8% in December and 14.8% in November 2025. The annual average total authorized floor area of the building index grew by 6.5% in 2025. Moreover, according to the Official State Gazette, construction permits were granted to 102 renewable energy projects in Spain (with a planned accumulative capacity of 1,272.7MW) in Q1 2026. Energy storage experienced a significant boost in Q1 2026. A total of 96 projects, with a combined capacity of 2,121.5MW, entered the public consultation phase, representing a 464% YoY increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Over the remainder of the forecast period, the construction industry is expected to register an average annual growth of 3% from 2027 to 2030, supported by investments in the construction of road and rail infrastructure and industrial projects, coupled with the government’s aim to increase the green hydrogen production capacity to 12GW by 2030, and 2.5% of all transport fuel to be green hydrogen over the period. In April 2026, Spanish energy group, Ignis announced a plan to construct a EUR1.4 billion ($1.7 billion) green ammonia production plant in Castellon de la Plana, with an estimated yearly production capacity 861,236 tons by 2031. Growth will also be supported by the government aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 90% by 2050 compared to 1990 levels. In April 2026, Ibedrola, a Spanish energy company secured construction permits from government to add two 51.3MW solar farms at its existing wind farms in east-central Spain. Furthermore, in April 2026, Aena, Spanish state-owned airport company, unveiled the largest investment plan through Airport Regulation Document, DORA III (2027-31), with major airport expansion works extending into 2034 and 2035. The operator proposed a total investment of EUR12.9 billion ($14.9 billion) for the five-year period, including nearly EUR10 billion ($11.6 billion) in regulated investments under DORA 2027-31. Pertinently, the plan aims to expand airport capacity to accommodate rising passenger traffic, while maintaining high standards of safety, maintenance, and service quality for passengers and airlines.
