The leading companies on the thematic screen of the publisher's ecommerce sector scorecard are all strong in the artificial intelligence (AI) theme. Travel site Expedia has incorporated ChatGPT into in-app travel planning, ride-hailing app Uber has a dedicated unit for AI that is central to the company's strategy, and tech giant Microsoft announced a multi-billion-dollar investment into OpenAI (creator of ChatGPT) in January 2023. Ecommerce companies are using AI to improve their offerings, from customer experience through to fulfillment.

Key Highlights

Only one Big Tech company, Microsoft, makes it into the top 10 of the thematic rankings. Meta and Amazon lag due to the adverse impact of regulation, particularly data privacy. Alphabet (the parent company of Google) narrowly missed the top 10, ranking at number 11.
The top 10 companies are also predominantly Western - six are North American, two are European, and only two (Rakuten and JD.com) are Asian. Asia's best-known online retailer, Alibaba, is in 12th place due to low scores in data privacy and regulation, two themes that are major challenges for many ecommerce companies.
