The government initiatives and regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change, promoting hydrogen technologies, increasing demand for clean energy from homeowners and the advantages offered by hydrogen gas boilers are some of the major drivers of the residential hydrogen boiler market.

However, the lack of hydrogen infrastructure, such as hydrogen production sites, hydrogen fuel stations, and distribution networks, limited availability of hydrogen boilers, competition from alternative heating technologies such as heat pumps, relatively high installation costs, and limited public awareness and understanding of hydrogen gas boilers are restraining the residential hydrogen boiler market growth.

What is a hydrogen boiler?

A hydrogen residential boiler is a heating system that uses hydrogen as a fuel source to heat homes. It works by converting the energy stored in hydrogen into heat energy, which is then used to produce hot water for the home's central heating system.

Hydrogen boilers are typically used in place of traditional fossil fuel boilers, such as oil or natural gas boilers. These are relatively new to the boiler market and are considered a clean and renewable energy source, as they emit only water vapour and do not produce any carbon emissions. This makes them an attractive option for homeowners who want to reduce their carbon footprint and save on energy costs.

The residential boiler market is dominated by conventional fossil fuel based boilers. The current scenario of residential hydrogen boilers is that they are still not widely adopted, and are still in the early stages of development and commercialization. Nevertheless, there is a growing interest in hydrogen boilers as a clean and renewable energy source, and recent technological developments have made them more efficient and cost-effective.

In some countries, governments are providing financial incentives to promote the adoption of hydrogen boilers. However, hydrogen boilers are not widely available in all regions, and homeowners in some areas may not have access to the technology. The lack of standardization and regulations for hydrogen boilers may also be a restraint on market growth.

Regional Analysis

The European region is the first in the world to successfully operate the first hydrogen-powered domestic boiler. In 2019, the town of Rozenburg in the Netherlands became home to the first hydrogen-powered household gas boiler to go into operation in the world. The boiler was developed by BDR Thermea Group, a leading provider of innovative thermal comfort solutions and the parent business of ECR International. The boiler uses clean hydrogen that has been produced using electricity from solar or wind energy, and it does so without releasing any carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The residential hydrogen boiler market has witnessed more activity in the European region, particularly in the United Kingdom.

The UK government is planning to gradually replace natural gas with much cleaner alternative fuels such as hydrogen in order to cut household gas use, reduce consumer costs, and reduce carbon emissions while enhancing national energy security and laying the groundwork for the switch to low-carbon heating.

In order to aid the potential transition to clean hydrogen heating in the future, the UK Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy has opened a consultation on a number of ideas to increase boiler and heating system efficiency in December 2022.

The government has already placed a ban on the installation of gas boilers in newbuild homes from 2025, and existing properties by 2035, meaning Britons will need to install alternative heating systems such as hydrogen-ready boilers in the near future.

The UK has been conducting pilot projects to test the viability of hydrogen blending into natural gas grids. The HyDeploy initiative at Keele University, which began in October 2019, was the first experiment of its kind in the country. During the study, hydrogen was blended with the campus' closed gas network at an amount of up to 20% hydrogen by volume.

The European Commission has been drafting new regulations for domestic boilers since 2018 and plans to phase out the fossil gas domestic boilers gradually in favour of cleaner alternatives. The commission is considering introducing a 20% hydrogen blend in the current gas boilers for a moderate transition to 100% pure hydrogen.

Recent Developments

  • The UK government has also invested GBP 25 million into the Hy4Heat program, a pilot scheme in Scotland to heat 300 homes with 100% hydrogen through the existing gas grid due to take place in 2023. The nation aims to ensure all new heating systems installed in UK homes by 2035 use low-carbon technologies, such as electric heat pumps, or support new technologies like fuel cells, and hydrogen boilers
  • In December 2022, the government of the United Kingdom made public a set of recommendations intended to make domestic heating more energy efficient. One of these proposals wants to make it mandatory, starting in 2026, that all gas boilers that are newly built must be compatible with hydrogen

Opportunities

  • The lack of proper hydrogen infrastructure and high prices are the major restraints to the current hydrogen boilers market, but as many countries have announced their hydrogen roadmaps, the production of hydrogen (both blue hydrogen and green hydrogen) is expected to increase in the future, resulting in the reduction of the hydrogen fuel prices offering a favourable market for the hydrogen boiler manufacturers
