The global peritoneal dialysis market size attained a value of nearly USD 4.64 billion in 2022. The market is likely to grow at a CAGR of 6.4% during the forecast period of 2023-2031 to attain a value of USD 8.11 billion by 2031.

Peritoneal Dialysis Market: Introduction

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a type of dialysis therapy that filters and cleans the blood inside the body when the kidneys are no longer able to do so adequately. This method uses the lining of the abdomen, known as the peritoneal membrane, as a natural filter.

The process involves introducing a dialysis solution into the peritoneal cavity through a catheter. The solution absorbs waste products and excess fluids from the blood across the peritoneal membrane. After a set dwell time, the used solution, now containing the waste products, is drained out and replaced with fresh dialysis solution. This cycle is repeated multiple times a day.

There are two main types of peritoneal dialysis:
  • Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): In CAPD, the process is done manually by the patient, usually four or five times a day at home or work
  • Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD): In APD, a machine called a cycler performs the exchanges during the night while the patient sleeps
Peritoneal dialysis is mainly used to treat end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure. It offers several advantages over traditional in-centre haemodialysis, such as greater flexibility and independence, the ability to dialyze at home or while traveling, and the absence of needles. For some patients, PD may also better preserve residual kidney function and offer a more continuous form of dialysis, more closely mimicking the kidneys' natural function.

Despite its benefits, peritoneal dialysis may not be suitable for everyone, including those who have had multiple abdominal surgeries, have certain types of vascular disease, or have an inability to care for themselves or lack of support at home.

Peritoneal Dialysis Market Scenario

The global market is witnessing substantial growth, primarily driven by the increasing prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The World Health Organization estimates that millions of people worldwide suffer from kidney diseases, with diabetes and hypertension being the leading causes. This surge in patient numbers necessitates an effective treatment method like peritoneal dialysis, thereby driving the market growth.

The peritoneal dialysis market's expansion is also bolstered by the increasing demand for home healthcare solutions. PD offers patients the flexibility to manage their dialysis treatment in the comfort of their homes, thereby reducing frequent hospital visits and related costs. This increased convenience and affordability make PD an attractive option for many patients and healthcare systems alike.

Technological advancements have been a key contributor to the growth of the PD market. The development of automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) machines, for instance, has enhanced the efficiency and ease of dialysis treatment at home. Companies are continuously investing in research and development to create more effective and user-friendly dialysis products, further propelling the market.

Regionally, North America holds a significant share of the global PD market due to the high prevalence of kidney diseases, advanced healthcare infrastructure, and widespread acceptance of home-based healthcare. However, the Asia Pacific region is anticipated to show rapid growth in the coming years due to its large patient population, growing awareness about kidney diseases, and improving healthcare facilities.

However, the market does face certain challenges. Lack of awareness about peritoneal dialysis, particularly in underdeveloped and developing regions, and the risk of peritonitis or infection associated with PD can hinder market growth.

Nevertheless, the overall future outlook for the peritoneal dialysis market remains positive, with the increasing prevalence of kidney diseases, ongoing technological advancements, and the growing trend of home-based healthcare expected to continue driving market growth.
