Botswana’s motor industry is largely an importer of vehicles, with new vehicles mostly imported from South Africa and second hand vehicles from Asia. New vehicles constitute less than a fifth of new vehicle registrations. The second-hand car market provides opportunities for local companies, particularly in the low-priced vehicle segment. The used vehicle market has been the major driver of growth in the national vehicle population over the years.

Tyres

The tyre industry in Botswana is composed of fitment, franchised shops and retail outlets. Major fitment and franchised shops are mostly representatives of South African companies and there are a number of locally-owned and foreign-owned outlets. The tyre industry in Botswana is largely import-driven with no new tyre manufacturing taking place. There are companies involved in retreading commercial tyres and earthmovers, while retreading for mines is done in South Africa. Botswana needs about 2,000 units of retreaded tyres monthly against a production of 400 units monthly, with the deficit imported from South Africa and China.

Component supply

Botswana’s automotive market is expected to grow in terms of sales due to the development of the mining sector. Botswana hopes to attract investors in replacement parts manufacture such as those making bumpers, carpets, and brake pads to set up shop in Botswana and use the country as a base for exports to the rest of Africa. Battery and wiring manufacturers are currently operating in Botswana.
