The market size for caustic soda in India reached a volume of more than 3.96 MMT in 2024. The India caustic soda market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.50% between 2025 and 2034, reaching a volume of 6.76 MMT by 2034.

Key Trends in the Market

Caustic soda is an inorganic compound which is highly soluble in water and has the capacity to absorb carbon dioxide as well as moisture directly from air. Its chemical name is sodium hydroxide and it is used in the manufacturing of soap and detergents, as a drainpipe cleaner, to unblock drains, and to remove grease from ovens.
  • Detergents and soaps prepared with the help of caustic soda are widely used in households for cleaning clothes and bathing. Clothes have multiple layers that allow virus to settle down into them which are removed by soaking the clothes in detergent for some time before washing them. The rising need for deep-cleaning clothes and homes to remove traces of pathogens are contributing to the growth of India caustic soda market.
  • Alumina is produced by Bayer’s process using caustic soda where the caustic soda acts as a dissolving agent. Alumina, due to its strength and hardness, is widely used in lightweight vehicles, spark plugs, cutting tools and various other essential products, increasing the demand for caustic soda.
  • Caustic soda involves low transportation costs as it is transported in anhydrous form which is lightweight. This also allows manufacturers to supply large quantities of caustic soda at once, fulfilling the high demand of the product, helping in the growth of the market.

Market Segmentation

The report titled “India Caustic Soda Market Report and Forecast 2025-2034 offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments:

Market Breakup by Type

  • Membrane Cell
  • Diaphragm Cell
  • Others

Market Breakup by Application

  • Pulp and Paper
  • Organic Chemical
  • Inorganic Chemical
  • Soap and Detergent
  • Alumina
  • Dyes and Inks
  • Textile
  • Pesticides
  • Pharma
  • Others

Market Share by Type

Both the membrane cell and diaphragm cell types of caustic soda use similar techniques for production. Chlorine is produced at anode by oxidising chloride ions and water is split at cathode into hydrogen and caustic soda.

The only difference between the two types are the different amounts of sodium chloride left at the end of the process. Membrane cell caustic soda involves less amount of left over sodium chloride when compared to diaphragm cell.

Membrane cell caustic soda has greater clarity and a lower degree of impurities as compared to diaphragm cell type, due to which membrane cell type occupies a significant segment of the India caustic soda market.

Market Share by Application

Decomposition of wood and production of pulp requires extensive use of caustic soda use. It is used to increase the pH during the pulping process which makes the fibres smooth and robust. Meanwhile, alumina is used in construction, automotive, and food packaging industries, primarily to make vehicles lightweight for consumer convenience.

In chemical industries, caustic soda is used for the production of chlorine. It is also known to act as an herbicide, fungicide, disinfectant, and algicide which increases the use of caustic soda in agriculture. Textile industries use caustic soda for dyeing, scouring, and mercerisation processes in textile manufacturing. The wide range of applications are contributing to the growth of India caustic soda market.
