Strategic Intelligence: Digital Identity
Summary
Digital identity is a collection of online information about a person, an organization, or a machine which, when grouped, provides a digital representation of that entity. An early driver for digital identity, vaccination certificates on smartphones to enable foreign travel, has been superseded in recent years by other applications including age verification, social and financial credit ratings, certification for the right to work and rent, criminal records checks, and digital wallets.China is the clear world leader in digital identity. It operates a powerful state-led digital infrastructure that boasts the world’s most advanced social credit and surveillance systems, and its tech-driven smart cities exemplify identity-driven governance and control. Elsewhere, countries in the Nordic region, Asia Pacific (APAC), and South America excel in digital identity. India’s Aadhaar system is the world's largest digital identity scheme, serving over 1.3 billion users. In the EU, all 27 member states will make a certified, functional digital identity wallet available to all citizens and residents who want one by the end of 2026. The wallet will enable EU citizens to securely verify their identity across borders without sharing unnecessary data. They can also control what attributes they share, such as proving they are over 18 without disclosing their date of birth.
