The United States bioenergy market reached around 12.60 Gigawatt in 2024. The market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.70% between 2025 and 2034, reaching almost 26.46 Gigawatt by 2034.

United States Bioenergy Market Growth

In 2022, the production and consumption of biofuels in the United States was 18.7 billion and 17.6 billion gallons, respectively. While ethanol constituted the largest share in production (82%) and consumption (75%) of biofuels, biodiesel and renewable diesel accounted for 17% of production and 18% of consumption, respectively. The United States is investing heavily in the development and commercialisation of other emerging biofuels, such as renewable heating oil, sustainable aviation fuel, renewable gasoline, and renewable naphtha, which is expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period.

Biofuel production and consumption in the United States has grown substantially since the introduction of the California government's Low Carbon Fuel Standard and the Renewable Fuel Standard Program by the federal government. The United States provides a tax credit of $1.00 per gallon to companies producing/blending biofuels. Washington and Oregon also have separate clean fuel programs, which are expected to accelerate to the adoption of biofuels in the United States, thereby driving market growth.

E-85 is a high-level fuel which comprises ethanol (51%-83%) and gasoline. It has the potential to reduce the United States' greenhouse gas emissions substantially by accelerating the decarbonisation of the transportation sector. E-85 is suitable for usage in flex fuel vehicles, and its fuelling stations enjoy a widespread network in the Midwest region.
