Italy Chiller Market Growth

In 2023, Italy’s textile and fashion industry witnessed a year-on-year growth of 3%. As energy prices decline and the demand for cashmere, alpaca, and woollen fabrics increase globally, the Italy textile and fashion industry is expected to witness further growth, driving the demand for absorption chillers in the country. Absorption chillers lack electric compressors, which reduces the emission of noise and the costs of electricity. They also rely on low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants for their functioning. Within the textile industry, chillers are crucial for ensuring that dye finishings adhere to the clothes and damage to the fabric is prevented.

The growth of artificial intelligence and gen AI has led to an increase in the volume of power-dense hardware within data centres. This has necessitated the integration of liquid cooling technologies into data centres to minimise latency between various compute resources and boost capacity. Through direct-to-chip technology, cool water is circulated directly to heat-producing electrical components to reduce their temperature, lower electricity costs, and enhance the operational efficiency of data centres. Immersion cooling is another option to bring down the heat within power-intensive data centres, whereby a server is submerged into a non-conductive liquid. The proliferation of edge computing and the rise in security mechanisms within data centres are expected to accelerate the Italy chiller market development in the coming years.

Key Trends and Developments

The Italy chiller market expansion is being driven by growing adoption of hybrid chillers; rising demand for district cooling systems; increasing trend of sustainability; and technological advancements.

January 2025

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air Conditioning Europe (MHIAE), in partnership with Stulz S.p.A, began the mass production of air-cooled heat pump chillers in Italy. The Hydrolution PRO series of chillers, employing low GWP R32 refrigerant and featuring the RC-MCU-E remote control system, are designed for diverse applications, ranging from IT environments to residential and office space heating/cooling.

October 2024

Zudek announced its intention to launch an ammonia chiller designed for comfort cooling in the commercial HVAC sector in the upcoming year. The chiller will employ semi-hermetic screw compressors, which will allow them to be smaller and lighter while lowering the requirement for frequent maintenance.

August 2024

Northeastern Italy-based Geoclima introduced the TMH Giant range of water-cooled chillers. The chillers, featuring an oil-free centrifugal compressor, Hanbell RTM100, are capable of delivering up to 398.1 RT individually and 1,194.2 RT in parallel installations. The chillers are ideal for both process and comfort applications requiring high cooling capacity and an outlet water temperature between 39.2°F and 57.2°F.

October 2022

Mitsubishi Electric announced the launch of its latest air-source chillers and heat pumps, developed in its Italian factory. The new range, encompassing an R32 air-cooled chiller (the MECH-iS-G07) and an R32 air source reversible heat pump (the MEHP-iS-G07), operates using R32 refrigerant, features variable speed scroll compressors, and is available in seven sizes.

Rising adoption of hybrid chillers

Hybrid chillers, combining two or more cooling technologies, are gaining significant traction as they optimise energy usage, reduce operational costs, and adapt to varying conditions, which is crucial in sectors such as data centres, manufacturing, and commercial buildings.

Increasing demand for district cooling systems

The growing demand for district cooling systems is boosting the Italy chiller market revenue. District cooling systems require large-scale cooling solutions, such as chillers, that can handle the cooling needs of multiple buildings or entire districts.

Growing trend of sustainability

With a rising focus on sustainability and the introduction of stringent government regulations promoting decarbonisation, the demand for chillers integrated with improved compressors, variable speed drives (VSD), and advanced heat exchangers to optimise energy usage is increasing. Moreover, there is a growing adoption of natural refrigerants like ammonia, CO2, and hydrocarbons as an alternative to traditional HFCs.

Technological advancements

The integration of the Internet of things (IoT) in chiller systems to enable operators to detect inefficiencies, optimise energy usage, facilitate predictive maintenance, and automatically adjust the performance based on environmental conditions and cooling demand. Moreover, the growing popularity of AI-based chillers that can automatically adjust their performance based on environmental conditions and real-time demand is aiding the market.

Italy Chiller Market Trends

Technological advancements are enabling the integration of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, and geothermal) into chiller systems to provide energy for cooling, reduce carbon footprint of the cooling process, and lower dependence on conventional energy sources. Moreover, chillers equipped with smart controls are increasingly integrated with Building Management Systems (BMS) to manage heating, cooling, lighting, and other functions of buildings.

Key players in the Italy chiller market are adopting green manufacturing practices such as adopting sustainable materials, reducing waste, and minimising energy usage during the production process. There is also a rising focus on recycling chiller components like aluminium, copper, and steel to support the circular economy model.
