Collective gold production from West Africa’s major markets (Ghana, Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso) decreased by an estimated 4.4% in 2024 and is projected to decline by 2.2% to 10.88moz in 2025.
Ghana is expected to be the largest contributor, representing 46.9% of the market share, followed by Burkina Faso(18.2%). Collective output from these two countries is forecast to increase from 6.7moz in 2024 to 7.1moz in 2025 - a 5.1% increase.
In contrast, output from Mali is expected to decline substantially by 30.8% to 1.4moz in 2025, linked mainly to the temporary suspension of Barrick Gold’s Loulo-Gounkoto mine due to a current dispute with the Malian government over alleged unpaid taxes and royalties.
Over the forecast period (2025-2030), gold production from West Africa’s major markets is expected to grow at a marginal 0.9% to a collective 11.4moz in 2030. This can be attributed to the scheduled closures of mines such as Fekola Mine and Fekola Regional in Mali, Essakane Gold Mine (Burkino faso) and Edikan Gold Mine (Ghana).
