This method enables the selective extraction and recovery of critical metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Compared to pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy is more energy-efficient and allows for the recovery of high-purity materials, making it an environmentally and economically favorable option in the sustainable recycling of battery materials. Direct recycling is an emerging method. It aims to regenerate cathode and anode materials without breaking down their crystal structure. This approach physically disassembles batteries, separates valuable components, and restores the cathode’s electrochemical capacity through relithiation. Direct recycling is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, however, is still under development for large-scale commercial use.
