Their lead reflects long clinical use in malignant dysphagia, broad physician familiarity, and the availability of covered, partially covered, and uncovered formats for different stricture types. The esophageal stents market continues to lean heavily on this category because product progress is coming through steady refinement rather than full technology replacement. Self-expanding plastic stents now occupy a narrower role because larger catheter profiles, higher migration risk, and greater handling complexity have reduced their appeal in malignant use.

Biodegradable stents are projected to grow at 5.89% CAGR from 2026 to 2031 in the esophageal stents industry. Their main advantage is that they can degrade within 3 to 4 months and avoid a retrieval endoscopy in selected benign stricture cases. That makes growth in the esophageal stents market more additive than disruptive, because some patients who avoided stenting may accept a biodegradable option. A 2024 review found that biodegradable stents had not shown clear statistical superiority over self-expanding metal or plastic stents in meta-analyses, yet sequential placement strategies are receiving more attention for extending dysphagia-free intervals.

Nitinol held 68.24% of material revenue in 2025 within the esophageal stents market. Its shape memory, superelastic behavior, and stable radial force make it the standard material for devices that must function through repeated esophageal motion. This has steadily reduced the role of stainless steel in modern esophageal stent design. Established suppliers also benefit because validated material sourcing and manufacturing experience matter in regulated implantable devices.

Plastic and polymer materials are projected to grow at 6.32% CAGR through 2031 in the esophageal stents market. Part of that rise comes from cost pressure in outpatient procurement, while another part comes from faster work on biodegradable platforms. Polydioxanone and PLLA are central to this shift because they support temporary scaffolds that do not need later removal in selected use cases. A 2025 Biomaterials study described a degradable biomimetic stent with hydrogel and a directional TGF-loaded nanofiber membrane for esophageal fistula treatment, which shows how polymer research is moving beyond passive lumen support.

North America held 37.68% of the esophageal stents market size in 2025. The United States accounted for most of that base because accredited endoscopy capacity, therapeutic expertise, and established reimbursement pathways supported high procedure throughput. Canada and Mexico added smaller contributions, with growth tied to oncology protocol development in Canada and private hospital investment in Mexico. The esophageal stents market in North America is also an important launch region for advanced covered stents because large health systems can adopt refinements faster than many other regions.
