The global laser diodes market was valued at USD 9.30 billion in 2025. It is estimated at USD 11.35 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 30.80 billion by 2036, growing at a CAGR of 10.5% over the 2026-2036 forecast period. This report offers a detailed assessment of the market, covering AI interconnect demand, co-packaged optics, laser chip capacity, raw material and trade risks, technology, pricing, regulation, M&A, and competition.

The study covers semiconductor lasers that emit coherent light from a p-n junction. These include edge emitters such as Fabry-Perot, DFB, EML, tunable, CW, and high-power broad-area chips and bars, plus VCSELs and quantum cascade devices. Devices are built mainly on indium phosphide (InP) for 1.3 and 1.55 micrometer datacom and telecom wavelengths, gallium arsenide (GaAs) for 650 to 1,100 nanometer devices such as pumps and VCSELs, and gallium nitride (GaN) for visible and UV output. Value is counted at the chip, packaged diode, and subassembly level, the last including pump modules and external laser source modules. Finished transceivers, fiber laser systems, and LiDAR sensors are excluded, and only their laser content is counted.

AI infrastructure has become the main source of new demand, and Lumentum, one of the largest laser chip suppliers, reported USD 1.01 billion in revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026, a 109% rise from a year before, as components revenue grew 102.7% on record 100G and 200G EML volumes; the company also said its laser chip shipments had doubled. Coherent's fiscal 2025 revenue reached USD 5.81 billion, according to the company, with data center sales growing 61% and InP capacity tripled within the year. Outside the data center, Hesai reported about 1,620,400 LiDAR units shipped in 2025, more than triple its 2024 volume, and Israel's Ministry of Defense cleared the 100-kilowatt Iron Beam laser for operational use in September 2025.

Market Dynamics

Growth is led by AI data centers, where optical transceivers connecting GPUs and switches rely on EML and CW lasers, and where the move from 800G to 1.6T and 3.2T modules raises both the laser count per link and the performance each laser must deliver. Co-packaged and near-packaged optics are opening a new category of demand, as high-power CW lasers are placed in separate external laser source modules that feed silicon photonic engines beside switches and processors; this brings optics into in-rack links that copper served until now. Scale-across links between AI campuses and new long-haul and subsea routes add demand for pump and narrow-linewidth lasers; according to Lumentum, its pump laser volumes climbed over 80% from the prior-year quarter in mid-2026. Automotive LiDAR is a further driver, as each sensor carries one or more pulsed edge emitters or VCSEL arrays and adoption spreads to mainstream vehicles.

Laser chip supply is the main limit on growth, as Lumentum stated in May 2026 that its laser chips were effectively sold out, its wafer fab in Japan was fully allocated, and the gap between demand and supply exceeded 30%, while its new InP fab in Greensboro, North Carolina, is not due until early 2028. In industrial lasers, value is under pressure from Chinese fiber laser makers that are exporting at lower prices; IPG Photonics reported that materials processing sales fell 24% year on year in the fourth quarter of 2024 as welding and cutting demand weakened. Raw material risk adds to these constraints: U.S. Geological Survey data show that China supplied 99% of the world's primary gallium in 2025, and in February 2025 China placed indium phosphide under export licensing. Suppliers also face reliability demands at higher speeds and powers, long qualification with a small group of hyperscale and module customers, and uncertainty over how silicon photonics and shared external lasers will change laser counts per link.

New InP capacity and larger wafers offer the clearest opportunity, with Coherent starting production on the first 6-inch InP wafer lines in Sherman, Texas, and Järfälla, Sweden, in 2025 and noting that the larger wafer gives over four times the chip output of a 3-inch wafer for less than half the cost. High-energy laser weapons, which use high-power diodes to pump fiber lasers, and LiDAR for delivery, logistics, and cleaning robots are also expected to open new demand. Key trends include the shift to 200G-per-lane lasers, with 200G EMLs exceeding a quarter of Lumentum's EML revenue by mid-2026, the use of optics inside the rack, and long-term supply agreements and customer allocation used to manage shortages.

Segment Analysis

The report analyzes the market by type, material & wavelength, output power, application, end user, and geography, helping stakeholders see where laser demand and value are moving.

By type, the market is divided into edge-emitting lasers (Fabry-Perot, DFB, electro-absorption modulated, continuous-wave, tunable, and high-power lasers), VCSELs, and quantum cascade lasers & others. Edge-emitting lasers are expected to hold the largest share in 2026, as they cover nearly every high-value use: EMLs and DFBs in AI transceivers, tunable and narrow-linewidth lasers in coherent links, high-power pump lasers for long-haul and subsea amplifiers, and broad-area diodes and bars for industrial and defense lasers. The same segment is also expected to post the highest CAGR through 2036, supported by rising 200G-per-lane EML volumes and new demand for ultra-high-power CW lasers in external laser source modules. VCSELs remain important for short-reach links, 3D sensing, and LiDAR arrays, while quantum cascade lasers serve mid-infrared niches.

By material & wavelength, the report covers indium phosphide (1.3 to 1.55 micrometers), gallium arsenide (650 to 1,100 nanometers), gallium nitride (blue, green, and UV), and others. Indium phosphide is expected to account for the largest share in 2026, since it is the substrate for the telecom and datacom wavelengths used by EMLs, DFBs, CW, and tunable lasers in transceivers and coherent optics. InP is also expected to grow at the highest CAGR, driven by AI interconnect demand and by capacity additions such as Coherent's 6-inch lines and Lumentum's planned U.S. fab, although China's export licensing on InP creates supply risk. GaAs supports pumps, VCSELs, and high-power diodes, while GaN serves visible lasers.

By output power, the market is split into devices below 1 W (low power) and those at 1 W or more (high power). Low power devices are expected to hold the larger share in 2026, as the large majority of datacom and telecom lasers, VCSELs for sensing, and DFB sources in transceivers operate below 1 W and ship in very high volumes to AI clusters. This segment is also expected to record the higher CAGR, in line with the scaling of optical links per AI system. High power diodes are tied to industrial fiber lasers, defense systems, and pump modules, and very high-power CW sources for co-packaged optics are a notable new category here.

By application, the study covers datacom & AI interconnects (pluggable transceivers and co-packaged and near-packaged optics), telecommunications (coherent and DCI and pump lasers), industrial materials processing, consumer sensing, automotive LiDAR & in-cabin sensing, medical & aesthetics, defense, and display & projection. Datacom & AI interconnects are expected to lead in 2026, as hyperscalers deploy 800G and 1.6T transceivers at record pace and lasers have become one of the scarcest components in AI networks. This application is also expected to grow at the highest CAGR, as optics move into in-rack links and laser counts per AI system increase. Automotive LiDAR and defense add fast-rising volumes, while industrial materials processing faces price erosion and cyclical demand.

By end user, the report covers transceiver & optical module makers, industrial laser manufacturers, automotive & LiDAR companies, consumer electronics OEMs, healthcare, and defense. Transceiver & optical module makers are expected to account for the largest share in 2026, as they buy the EMLs, DFBs, and CW lasers that go into AI and cloud networking modules and are now signing multi-year supply agreements to secure allocation. The same group is expected to record the highest CAGR, supported by the transition to 1.6T and later 3.2T modules and by the arrival of external laser source modules. Industrial laser makers remain major pump diode buyers and are pressing for lower diode costs.

Regional Analysis

The report covers Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa, with analysis of 21 countries and four rest-of-region groups. The regional analysis considers laser chip and wafer capacity, transceiver and laser system manufacturing, hyperscale AI investment, automotive and industrial production, defense programs, and material supply risks.

Asia-Pacific is expected to hold the largest share of the market in 2026, reflecting its concentration of laser chip, optical module, industrial laser, and LiDAR production. Japan is home to Lumentum's fully allocated wafer fab and to Mitsubishi Electric, Sumitomo Electric, Nichia, Hamamatsu, and Ushio. China leads demand for industrial fiber lasers, home to low-cost makers such as Wuhan Raycus and Maxphotonics and to LiDAR leader Hesai, and it controls key gallium and InP inputs. Malaysia and Thailand are major transceiver assembly hubs, including Coherent's sites in Ipoh and Penang, while Taiwan, South Korea, and India are expanding optoelectronics production.

North America is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, supported by U.S. hyperscalers, which are the largest buyers of AI optical interconnects, and by new domestic InP capacity, including Coherent's 6-inch production in Texas and Lumentum's fab in North Carolina. IPG Photonics and nLight add U.S. high-power diode output for factory and military lasers. Europe holds a significant share, backed by TRUMPF, Jenoptik, and ams OSRAM, Coherent's InP line in Sweden, and the European Chips Act. Mexico leads Latin America on the strength of its automotive and electronics base, while Israel's Iron Beam program and Gulf AI data center projects support demand in the Middle East & Africa.
