The global continuous ketone monitoring market was valued at USD 18.5 million in 2025. It is estimated at USD 118.0 million in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 5.48 billion by 2036, growing at a CAGR of 46.8% over the 2026-2036 forecast period. This report assesses the market in depth, covering the clinical landscape of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), sensing technology, regulation and reimbursement, the product pipeline, pricing, the value chain, and competition.

The study covers wearable sensors that measure ketones without interruption, mainly beta-hydroxybutyrate in interstitial fluid, which is the main ketone body in DKA, plus the related readers, apps, alarms, and data platforms. In scope are dual glucose-ketone sensors that track both analytes from one wearable, standalone ketone sensors, and software and data services. Core users are people with type 1 diabetes, insulin-treated type 2 diabetes, and those taking sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, along with pregnant women with diabetes and hospitalized patients. Conventional blood ketone meters and urine ketone strips are excluded.

Commercialization started when Abbott obtained CE marking in May 2026 for Libre Duo, cleared for adults with wear of up to 15 days, and Libre Duo 10 Day, cleared from age 2, both reading glucose and ketones every minute. The FDA then cleared Libre Duo 10 Day through the De Novo route on 25 August 2026, drawing on six clinical studies with more than 600 participants. It became the first U.S. wearable that tracks ketones continuously and the first product to satisfy the agency's newly created integrated continuous glucose and ketone monitoring (iCGK) standard. The clinical need is clear: Abbott reported data showing that DKA hospital admissions have grown by 55% over the past decade.

Market Dynamics

Growth is led by the rising burden of DKA, a life-threatening emergency that can develop within hours when insulin is lacking. Current tools fall short, as urine strips detect acetoacetate rather than beta-hydroxybutyrate and lag real-time levels, and most people with diabetes keep no blood ketone meter at home. The wide use of SGLT2 inhibitors for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and kidney disease adds risk, because these drugs can trigger euglycemic DKA at normal or near-normal glucose; the FDA issued a safety communication in May 2015 after identifying 20 cases that needed emergency care or hospitalization. The first authorizations, the iCGK standard, and the international consensus framework published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology in December 2025 give clinicians, payers, and competitors a clear pathway.

Restraints include the very small number of authorized products, since Abbott's Libre Duo 10 Day is the only system cleared in the U.S., which limits choice and leaves users of other glucose monitoring platforms without access. Reimbursement for a new device category priced above glucose-only sensors is still uncertain, and early sensors have technical limits; Abbott notes that its Urgent High Ketones alarm may miss some readings above 3.0 mmol/L, so blood testing is still needed for confirmation. Dexcom's 2025 FDA warning letter and G7 recall show how quality problems can damage trust. Key challenges include setting clinical thresholds and response protocols, building interoperability with insulin pumps, producing dual-analyte sensors reliably at high volume, and proving that monitoring reduces DKA admissions and costs.

Integration with automated insulin delivery (AID) is the leading opportunity, as ketone data could help pumps detect delivery failures such as infusion set blockages; Abbott and MiniMed are working on an exclusive integration expected in 2027. Hospital and perioperative monitoring is another opportunity, since the FDA's March 2020 labeling asks patients to stop SGLT2 inhibitors three to four days before scheduled surgery because of ketoacidosis risk. Use in pregnancy, latent autoimmune diabetes, and medical ketogenic diets could widen the market further. Main trends include multi-analyte biowearables that combine glucose and ketone sensing, the growth of standards and clinical consensus, the flow of ketone data into apps, pumps, and clinical platforms, and the prospect of wider SGLT2 inhibitor use in type 1 diabetes once ketone risk can be watched continuously.

Segment Analysis

The report analyzes the market by product type, integration, wear duration, patient population, age group, end user, distribution channel, and geography, helping stakeholders see where early adoption and long-term value will come from.

By product type, the study examines dual glucose-ketone sensors, standalone sensors that measure only ketones, and software & data platforms. Dual glucose-ketone sensors are expected to hold the largest share in 2026, as Abbott's authorized Libre Duo systems in Europe and the U.S. belong to this category and users gain ketone safety data without wearing a second device or doing an extra test. Software & data platforms are expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, driven by remote monitoring by caregivers and clinicians, clinical decision support, and the flow of ketone data into insulin delivery systems and electronic health records.

By integration, the report covers standalone systems and systems integrated with AID. Standalone systems are expected to hold the larger share in 2026, because continuous ketone monitoring is launching first as an app-based product that works on its own before any pump link is available. Systems integrated with AID are expected to record the higher CAGR, supported by the planned 2027 integration of Abbott's dual sensors with MiniMed systems, and the high DKA risk created by insulin delivery failures in pump users.

The wear duration analysis covers sensors worn for up to 10 days and those worn for more than 10 days. The two current products show the split: the pediatric-capable Libre Duo 10 Day is capped at a 10-day wear period, based on how reliably active children complete wear in trials, while the adult-only Libre Duo can stay on for up to 15 days in Europe. Longer wear lowers cost per day and reduces sensor changes, but requires accuracy and drift control for two analytes over the full period.

The patient population analysis spans people with type 1 diabetes, those with insulin-treated type 2 diabetes, SGLT2 inhibitor users, pregnant women, and other high-risk groups. People with type 1 diabetes are expected to make up the largest share in 2026, given their high DKA risk, their established use of continuous glucose monitoring, and their reliance on pumps. SGLT2 inhibitor users are expected to grow at the highest CAGR, as these drugs are widely prescribed for diabetes, heart failure, and kidney disease, and glucose monitoring alone cannot detect euglycemic DKA.

By age group, the report covers pediatric and adult users. Adults are expected to hold the larger share in 2026, since most people living with type 1 or insulin-treated type 2 diabetes are adults and both Libre Duo products can be used by them. The pediatric segment is expected to grow at the higher CAGR, as Libre Duo 10 Day is authorized for children from age 2, children face a high risk of DKA, and many newly diagnosed children start on insulin pumps, where delivery failures can quickly raise ketones.

By end user, the study covers home care settings, hospitals & clinics, and research institutions. Home care settings are expected to hold the largest share in 2026, as continuous ketone monitors are built for self-management and for caregivers who follow at-risk users through connected apps. Hospitals & clinics are expected to grow at the highest CAGR, driven by interest in ketone tracking during surgery, acute illness, emergency care, and DKA treatment.

By distribution channel, the report covers retail pharmacies, durable medical equipment suppliers, and online & direct-to-consumer sales. Retail pharmacies are expected to hold the largest share in 2026, building on their established role in dispensing continuous glucose sensors. Online & direct-to-consumer channels are expected to grow at the highest CAGR, supported by app-linked ordering and subscription models.

Regional Analysis

The report covers North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa, with analysis of 22 countries, Kuwait & Qatar, the Nordic countries, and five rest-of-region groups. The regional analysis considers diabetes prevalence, use of continuous glucose monitoring and AID, regulatory status, reimbursement, SGLT2 inhibitor use, and local sensor manufacturing.

North America is expected to hold the largest share in 2026, as the U.S. has high uptake of continuous glucose monitoring and AID, a large type 1 diabetes population, and the first FDA-authorized continuous ketone monitor, with Abbott's U.S. launch planned for later in 2026 and MiniMed integration expected in 2027. Broad SGLT2 inhibitor use, covered by the FDA's 2015 safety communication and 2020 presurgery labeling, adds a large at-risk group. Europe holds a significant share and cleared the technology first, through Abbott's May 2026 CE marking, with a phased rollout in selected countries; reimbursement of glucose monitoring for type 1 diabetes in the U.K., Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the Nordic countries provides a base for dual sensors.

Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, supported by its very large diabetes population, rising use of continuous glucose monitoring, and regional sensor makers. India's national diabetes study estimated 101 million people living with diabetes in 2021, China has a large domestic glucose sensor industry that includes SiBionics, Sinocare, and Medtrum, South Korea hosts i-SENS, and Japan and Australia fund glucose monitoring in type 1 diabetes. In Latin America, where the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimated about 32 million adults with diabetes in South and Central America in 2021, Brazil and Mexico lead. The Middle East & Africa should grow strongly from a small base, as the IDF estimated about 73 million adults with diabetes in the Middle East and North Africa in 2021 and Gulf health systems are well funded.

Competitive Landscape

The report reviews key growth strategies, competitive benchmarking, the competitive dashboard (industry leaders, market differentiators, vanguards, and emerging companies), and 2025 market share/rank analysis by key player.
