The U.S. drone market was valued at USD 14.70 billion in 2025. It is estimated at USD 17.35 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 44.19 billion by 2036, growing at a CAGR of 9.8% over the 2026-2036 forecast period. This report assesses the market in depth, covering federal policy and regulation, defense budgets and procurement programs, autonomy and other enabling technologies, component supply chains, the value chain, pricing, investment and M&A activity, and competition.

The study covers uncrewed aircraft systems and the payloads, software, and services bought by U.S. defense, government, commercial, and consumer users. Platforms range across every Pentagon size group, from small FPV and tactical quadcopters up to long-endurance aircraft flying at medium and high altitude. The study also covers components such as airframes, motors, batteries, flight control and datalink equipment, and imaging and sensing payloads, together with autonomy, fleet, and analytics software and services such as delivery, inspection and mapping, upkeep, and pilot training. Systems built to counter drones, as well as uncrewed ground and sea vehicles, fall outside the scope.

Federal policy is now the main force shaping demand, led by a memo titled Unleashing U.S. Military Drone Dominance, issued on 10 July 2025, in which the Secretary of Defense set a deadline of the end of fiscal 2026 for giving each Army squad small one-way attack drones and moved small drones into the consumables category. The Army Secretary added in November 2025 that the service intends to purchase one million drones over a two-to-three-year period. On the civil side, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) placed all foreign-produced drones and their critical components on its Covered List on 22 December 2025, while a January 2026 update lets drones on the Blue UAS list, and products whose content is at least 65% domestic, qualify for exceptions until 1 January 2027. Delivery is also scaling: Walmart and Wing logged over 75,000 drone deliveries around Dallas-Fort Worth and then announced plans to add 100 more stores.

Market Dynamics

The market is driven mainly by the Department of Defense's drive for drone dominance, which requires the services to set up experimental drone formations, scale small drones across the joint force with priority for Indo-Pacific Command units, and buy at volumes far above past U.S. purchases. Drone delivery by large retailers is a second driver: Walmart and Wing are adding sites in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa, Amazon has extended Prime Air to suburban Phoenix and is preparing launches in Dallas, San Antonio, and Kansas City, and these networks need large fleets, docks, chargers, and software. Federal sourcing policy adds further support, as NDAA Section 1709, the FCC Covered List action, and the defense preference for U.S. suppliers push government agencies, utilities, and enterprises toward U.S.-made drones.

Reliance on Chinese motors, magnets, batteries, and electronics restrains growth, as shown when China sanctioned Skydio, the largest U.S. drone maker, in October 2024 and its battery supplier was ordered to stop deliveries, forcing the company to ration batteries to one per drone. Rules for routine beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) flight have been slow to arrive, as the 1 February 2026 deadline for the final Part 108 rule passed and operators warned that uncertainty was holding back investment. The ban on new foreign models removes low-cost platforms that many farmers, inspectors, and public safety agencies relied on, and domestic production is still far too small for targets such as one million Army drones. Operators also face the challenge of keeping foreign fleets in service when even minor changes may need new authorization, along with weak delivery economics, compliance and testing workloads, and the need to train operators, maintainers, and BVLOS supervisors at scale.

Opportunities will follow the final Part 108 rule, which would replace case-by-case waivers with standard permits and certificates and let one operator supervise many aircraft, as Wing already does with up to 32 drones per pilot. The FCC's domestic content exception, the Blue UAS Cleared List, and defense buying preferences open a market for American-built cells, motors, cameras, radios, and flight electronics. The squad-level attack drone mandate opens a high-volume market for low-cost loitering munitions and FPV systems. Key trends include the treatment of small military drones as consumables that troops can modify and expend, the scaling of retail and medical delivery networks across U.S. metro areas, and the replacement of foreign fleets with NDAA-compliant drones from companies such as Skydio, BRINC, and Teal Drones.

Segment Analysis

The report analyzes the market by drone type, size class, offering, operation mode, end user, and region, helping stakeholders identify where defense and commercial spending is moving.

By drone type, the report covers fixed-wing, rotary-wing (multirotor and single-rotor), hybrid VTOL, and loitering munitions. Fixed-wing drones are expected to hold the largest share in 2026, as the category includes high-value medium- and high-altitude long-endurance aircraft used for military surveillance and strike missions, and each of these systems carries a far higher price than small drones. Loitering munitions are expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, driven by the fiscal 2026 squad-level attack drone deadline, the new consumable status of small drones, and the Army's goal of buying drones in very large numbers. Rotary-wing multirotor drones remain the main platform for public safety, inspection, delivery, and consumer use.

By size class, the study examines Group 1-2 (small UAS), Group 3, and Group 4-5 (large UAS). Group 4-5 drones are expected to account for the largest share by value in 2026, as large uncrewed aircraft and collaborative combat aircraft programs involve costly platforms with advanced sensors, long endurance, and multi-year support contracts. Group 1-2 drones are expected to grow at the highest CAGR, since the drone dominance memo targets mass adoption of small drones across the joint force, the Army plans purchases on a scale never seen before, and commercial and public safety buyers are replacing foreign small drones with U.S.-made models.

The offering analysis covers hardware (airframes & propulsion, payloads, avionics & flight control, datalinks & communications, and batteries & power systems), software (autonomy & navigation, fleet management, and data analytics), and services (drone delivery, drone-as-a-service for inspection, mapping, and surveying, maintenance & repair, and training). Hardware is expected to hold the largest share in 2026, as each drone purchase includes the airframe, propulsion, sensors, and communications equipment that make up most of the system cost. Services are expected to grow at the highest CAGR, driven by the expansion of retail drone delivery and by drone-as-a-service inspection and mapping, which become easier to scale once routine BVLOS flight is allowed.

By operation mode, the report covers visual line of sight (VLOS), beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), and autonomous & swarm operations. VLOS operations are expected to account for the largest share in 2026, as current Part 107 rules generally require pilots to keep drones in view and most commercial and consumer flights take place under these limits. BVLOS operations are expected to grow at the highest CAGR, supported by the proposed Part 108 rule, the needs of delivery, pipeline, and agricultural operators to cover longer distances, and one-to-many pilot ratios that improve cost per flight.

By end user, the study examines defense (Army, Navy & Marine Corps, Air Force & Space Force, and Special Operations Command), homeland security & public safety (border security, law enforcement, and fire & emergency services), commercial (delivery & logistics, energy & utilities, construction & mining, agriculture, media & entertainment, and insurance & real estate), and consumer. Defense is expected to hold the largest share in 2026, reflecting large budgets for both high-end uncrewed aircraft and small drones, and the policy shift toward mass adoption across all services. The commercial segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR, driven by retail and medical drone delivery, infrastructure and utility inspection, and agricultural spraying, all of which expand once BVLOS rules are in place.

Regional Analysis

The report covers four U.S. regions (South, West, Midwest, and Northeast) and analyzes Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, California, Arizona, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri & Kansas, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, along with a rest-of-region group in each. The analysis considers military installations, delivery networks, manufacturing and technology clusters, agriculture and infrastructure users, and state and local drone laws.

The South is expected to be the largest regional market in 2026 and also to grow at the highest CAGR, as Texas is home to major Army installations where drone formations are being built and is the center of U.S. drone delivery, with Walmart and Wing active in Dallas-Fort Worth and Amazon preparing launches in Dallas and San Antonio. The Walmart and Wing expansion brings new delivery sites to cities in Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, and Florida, and the region hosts many large military bases. Virginia was the site of Wing's first U.S. delivery service in 2019.

The West holds a significant share as the main hub for drone and autonomy development in the U.S., with California home to Skydio, Anduril, Shield AI, AeroVironment, and Zipline, Arizona hosting Amazon's Prime Air service near Phoenix, and Washington, Colorado, and Utah supporting manufacturing, testing, and defense programs. The Midwest is supported by agriculture, utility inspection, and planned delivery in Kansas City, while farmers there must find U.S. sources as foreign spraying drones lose access. The Northeast is driven by public safety, infrastructure inspection, and defense research, and the late-2024 drone sightings over New Jersey raised attention to airspace security.

Competitive Landscape

The report reviews key growth strategies, competitive benchmarking, the competitive dashboard (industry leaders, market differentiators, vanguards, and emerging companies), and 2025 market share/rank analysis, with company profiles of defense and large UAS manufacturers, small UAS and public safety drone manufacturers, and drone delivery operators covering business overview, financial overview, product portfolio, strategic developments, and SWOT analysis.

The market is fragmented, as defense primes and specialist makers lead military programs, a growing group of venture-backed drone and autonomy companies is winning new contracts, and delivery operators are backed by major technology and retail groups. The FCC ban on new foreign models is opening commercial and consumer segments that foreign suppliers long dominated. Buyers judge suppliers on capability, price, U.S. content and NDAA status, the quality of their autonomy software, how many units they can build, and their standing with military, police, and retail customers. Leading players are adding U.S. factory capacity, moving component sourcing away from China, building cheap expendable drones and loitering munitions, investing in autonomy and swarming, and extending delivery coverage, with production capacity and supply security now as important as technology in winning contracts.

Key companies profiled in the report include AeroVironment, Inc. (U.S.), General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc.
