The global rocket propulsion market was valued at USD 18.60 billion in 2025. It is estimated at USD 20.80 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 46.60 billion by 2036, growing at a CAGR of 8.4% over the 2026-2036 forecast period. The report examines launch activity, defense propulsion demand, the solid rocket motor industrial base, energetics and propellant supply, engine and thruster technology, export control and licensing rules, pricing, the value chain, and competition.

The study covers the engines, motors, thrusters, and related components that produce thrust for launch vehicles, missiles, and spacecraft. In scope are liquid engines burning kerosene, methane, hydrogen, or storable propellants, together with their turbopumps, combustion chambers, nozzles, and feed systems; solid motors for missiles, interceptors, rocket artillery, and launch boosters; hybrid motors; Hall-effect, gridded ion, and other electric thrusters; green monopropellant, hydrazine, and cold gas thrusters; and nuclear propulsion still in development. Propellants sold on their own and complete launch services are not included. Demand comes from launch providers, defense primes, specialist propulsion makers, new-space companies, space agencies, and armed forces.

According to launch records kept by astronomer Jonathan McDowell, launch activity reached a new high of 329 orbital attempts in 2025, 321 of which reached orbit or near orbit, including 165 Falcon 9 flights by SpaceX alone and 92 attempts by China, 35% more than in 2024. Defense demand is rising at the same time; the European Defence Agency estimates that EU member states spent EUR 418 billion on defense in 2025, adding to orders for missiles, air defense interceptors, and rocket artillery.

Market Dynamics

Each launch consumes first- and second-stage engines or motors, and most constellation spacecraft fly with thrusters of their own, so higher launch rates raise demand along the whole value chain. Starlink alone operates over 8,000 satellites, while China intends to field more than 10,000 in each of its Guowang and Thousand Sails networks. Conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East have drawn down U.S. and allied stocks of Javelin, GMLRS, PAC-3, and Standard Missiles, and in July 2026 the Pentagon signed seven-year framework agreements with L3Harris under which the company said it would nearly triple output of certain PAC-3 products and quadruple THAAD components. In-space propulsion is a further driver, as constellation satellites rely on electric thrusters to climb to their operating orbits, hold position, dodge debris, and leave orbit at end of life, while servicing, orbital transfer, and lunar missions need restartable engines.

The solid rocket motor industrial base is the main bottleneck, as the U.S. long relied on just two domestic motor makers, Northrop Grumman and L3Harris' Aerojet Rocketdyne, and ammonium perchlorate, the oxidizer in solid propellant, comes in volume from a single qualified U.S. source, American Pacific in Utah. New launch vehicles also carry high development risk, as shown by Isar Aerospace's loss of its first Spectrum rocket in March 2025 and failed first-stage recoveries by Zhuque-3 and Long March 12A in December 2025. Export controls under the Missile Technology Control Regime and ITAR limit cross-border sales, and the concentration of launches in SpaceX, which builds its own Merlin and Raptor engines, shrinks the merchant engine market. Qualifying new suppliers, designing engines for many reuses, moving away from hydrazine, which the EU has listed as a substance of very high concern under REACH, and limited range and licensing capacity remain key challenges.

New solid rocket motor suppliers have a sizable opening as the Pentagon seeks more sources; General Dynamics and start-ups such as Anduril, Ursa Major, and X-Bow Systems are moving into motor production, and RTX has teamed with Italy's Avio on motor development. Reusable methane engines offer another opportunity, since methane burns cleanly and eases refurbishment, and it powers SpaceX's Raptor, Blue Origin's BE-4, and LandSpace's Zhuque-3. In-space mobility and hypersonic missiles and interceptors open further room for new propulsion technology. Key trends include reusable propulsion, the move to methane, additive manufacturing and in-house engine production, and multi-sourcing of defense rocket motors.

Segment Analysis

The report analyzes the market by propulsion type, component, application, reusability, end user, and geography, helping stakeholders identify where launch and defense spending on propulsion is heading.

By propulsion type, the report covers liquid propulsion (kerosene (RP-1), methane (LNG/methalox), hydrogen, and storable/hypergolic), solid propulsion, hybrid propulsion, electric propulsion (Hall-effect thrusters, gridded ion thrusters, and other electric propulsion), green monopropellant & cold gas, and nuclear propulsion. Solid propulsion is expected to hold the largest share in 2026, since nearly all missiles, air defense interceptors, and rocket artillery rounds use solid motors, multi-year production agreements are lifting motor output, and solid boosters also support launch vehicles. Electric propulsion is expected to grow at the highest CAGR, driven by the large number of constellation satellites that use Hall-effect thrusters for orbit raising and deorbiting, as well as by in-space mobility missions. Within liquid propulsion, methane engines are gaining ground in new reusable launch vehicles.

By component, the study examines complete engines & motors, turbopumps, combustion chambers & nozzles, propellant feed systems & valves, and thrusters. Complete engines & motors are expected to account for the largest share in 2026, because weapons makers buy finished solid rocket motors and launch providers buy complete liquid engines, which carry the highest value per unit. Thrusters are expected to grow at the highest CAGR, supported by satellite and in-space propulsion demand from constellations, servicing missions, and debris-related maneuvering rules.

The application analysis spans launch vehicles (booster stages and upper stages), missiles & munitions (tactical missiles & rocket artillery, air & missile defense interceptors, strategic missiles, and hypersonic systems), satellites & in-space propulsion, and human spaceflight & exploration. Missiles & munitions are expected to hold the largest share in 2026, reflecting strong orders for interceptors and precision munitions and long-term production agreements for programs such as PAC-3 and THAAD. Satellites & in-space propulsion is expected to grow at the highest CAGR, as constellation deployment and in-space mobility services add many propulsion-equipped spacecraft each year. Launch vehicles remain a large application, though much of their engine value is produced in-house by integrated providers.

By reusability, the market is divided into expendable and reusable propulsion. Expendable propulsion is expected to hold the larger share in 2026, because missiles, interceptors, solid motors, and most upper stages are used only once. Reusable propulsion is expected to grow at the higher CAGR, as launch providers in the U.S., China, and Europe adopt reusable vehicles following the success of Falcon 9, some of whose boosters have flown more than 30 times. Reuse shifts demand toward fewer, more durable engines plus refurbishment services.

The end user analysis covers commercial, defense, and civil government customers, with defense expected to account for the largest share in 2026, driven by heavy spending on missiles, interceptors, and strategic systems and by the need to rebuild stocks drawn down in recent conflicts. The commercial segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR, supported by commercial launch providers, constellation operators, and in-space service companies that are increasing launch and satellite volumes. Civil government demand comes mainly from space agency launch and exploration programs.

Regional Analysis

The report covers North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa, with analysis of 21 countries and five rest-of-region groups. The regional analysis considers launch cadence, defense budgets and missile programs, the presence of propulsion manufacturers, propellant supply, and launch site and licensing capacity.

North America is expected to remain the largest regional market in 2026, backed by the world's busiest launch schedule, the biggest defense budget, and a deep base of propulsion suppliers. U.S. providers made 181 orbital launch attempts in 2025, and the U.S. hosts established players such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman, and L3Harris' Aerojet Rocketdyne, as well as newer motor makers. An August 2025 executive order sought to speed up commercial launch licensing, and Canada is building domestic launch capability.

Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, driven by China's rapid rise in launches, national space programs, and higher defense spending. Chinese commercial firms are developing reusable methane rockets, India flew five launches in 2025, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries runs Japan's H3 launcher, and South Korea and Australia are working on domestic launch capability. Europe holds a significant share, with eight launch attempts in 2025, propulsion makers such as ArianeGroup, Safran, Avio, and Norway's Nammo, and new launch start-ups in Germany, the U.K., and Spain. In Latin America, Brazil's Alcântara Launch Center benefits from its near-equatorial location, while in the Middle East & Africa, Israel's missile industry, defense localization in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and South Africa's rocket capabilities support demand.

Competitive Landscape

The report reviews key growth strategies, competitive benchmarking, the competitive dashboard (industry leaders, market differentiators, vanguards, and emerging companies), and 2025 market share/rank analysis, with profiles of launch propulsion leaders, defense and solid motor suppliers, and European and Asia-Pacific propulsion companies covering business overview, financials, product portfolio, strategic developments, and SWOT analysis.

The market brings together vertically integrated launch providers, established defense and aerospace primes, European and Asian launch propulsion makers, new-space start-ups, and in-space propulsion suppliers. Competition rests on performance, reliability, reuse, cost, production capacity, qualification with government buyers, and secure propellant supply.
