This report values the global space battery market - space-qualified battery cells, packs and modules, and their battery management electronics - at US$0.40B in 2025, up from an estimated US$0.29B in 2021, a historical CAGR of approximately 8.2%. The market is forecast to reach US$0.59B by 2030 at an 8.0% CAGR (2026-2030). North America is the largest region at approximately 42% of 2025 demand, anchored by U.S. civil, defense and commercial constellation programs, while Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region at approximately 9.6% CAGR, led by China’s state and commercial constellations and India’s expanding launch and satellite programs.

Lithium-ion is the largest segment at about 58% share and also the fastest-growing at ~10.4% CAGR, having displaced nickel-hydrogen and nickel-cadmium on new satellites; solid-state and other emerging segments grow fastest from a very small, largely development-funded base. Rechargeable batteries account for ~76% of value against ~24% for primary batteries, which remain essential for launch vehicles, probes and landers. Communication satellites are the largest platform (~28%) and eclipse and bus energy storage the largest application (~44%), making lithium-ion batteries for satellite eclipse storage the largest combined chemistry-application pool; lunar landers and rovers (~13.6% CAGR) and surface-exploration power (~13.8%) are the fastest-growing platform and application. Satellite and spacecraft manufacturers are the largest procuring end users (~38%), while commercial exploration companies are the fastest-growing (~13.0% CAGR).

Growth is driven by low-Earth-orbit constellation deployment, rising Earth-observation, navigation and defense investment, lunar and deep-space exploration, higher payload power demand and longer mission lives. Key trends include higher-specific-energy lithium-ion cells, modular packs built from small-format cells, CubeSat-scale batteries, richer state-of-health telemetry, improved thermal-runaway propagation mitigation and supply-chain localization; solid-state batteries remain at demonstration stage. Principal restraints are stringent qualification requirements, long design-in cycles, a narrow qualified supplier base, raw-material volatility and program delays. Competition is concentrated among a small group of qualified specialists - Saft, EaglePicher Technologies, GS Yuasa and EnerSys (ABSL) - alongside small-satellite power suppliers and vertically integrated primes and operators, and the outlook is for sustained, high-single-digit growth through 2030 as space-qualified energy storage remains mission-critical across every spacecraft class.
