World bean production rebounded 8.5% to about 4.73 Mt in 2024/25, returning the balance to a small surplus (about 37,000 tonnes) and lifting stocks to 1.31 Mt, or 28.2% of grindings. Africa supplies about 71.5% of the world's beans, led by Côte d'Ivoire (about 38%), Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon; the Americas contribute about 22%, with Ecuador now the leading origin outside Africa and Brazil and Peru next, while Asia & Oceania contribute about 6%, led by Indonesia. Europe is the largest consuming region (about 36% of grindings), with the Netherlands and Germany as the principal importing and processing hubs; Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia and Malaysia are the leading origin-processing and export centres. Forastero bulk cocoa accounts for roughly 80% of supply, fine-or-flavour cocoa for about 12% of bean exports, and chocolate and confectionery remains the dominant end use, while beverages, functional foods and premium dark chocolate are the fastest-growing applications and traceable, certified and fine-flavour cocoa the fastest-growing bean segments. Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region at about 6.6% CAGR (2026-2030).
Demand is supported by rising chocolate consumption in Asia and other emerging markets, premiumisation, origin processing investment and strong buyer demand for sustainable, traceable cocoa ahead of the EU Deforestation Regulation. Key trends include farm-level mapping and digital traceability, agroforestry and climate-smart farming, direct sourcing and single-origin programmes. The market's principal risks are climate variability and El Niño, cocoa swollen shoot virus and black pod disease, ageing trees and low farm productivity, extreme price volatility, high financing and compliance costs, and heavy dependence on two West African origins. The competitive landscape is concentrated among integrated processors and merchants such as Barry Callebaut, Cargill, ofi, ECOM, Touton, Sucden, Guan Chong and Fuji Oil (Blommer). Overall, Daedal Research expects a volatile but structurally supported market in which supply diversification, farm productivity and traceability determine long-term value.
