Law Firm Hourly Rates Rise with Historic Demand
The Valeo Legal Pricing Platform, “Platform” identifies and uploads publicly disclosed documents that detail the hourly rates of attorneys and support staff at 3,000 law firms representing over 20,000 client entities, mainly large corporations (Fortune 1000, Global 500 and others) in 64 countries with hourly rates denominated in 17 currencies for 80 Practice Areas and 100 Industries. This process provides complete rate cards for every law firm for every major practice area. Secondary public records research is performed to complete detailed engagement profiles of the attorneys and companies involved.
Through this process the Platform provides actionable data to our users - mainly law firms, corporations and consulting firms - to make:
- Direct comparisons between attorneys and firms (as opposed to general averages of a collection of various firms' rates as found in surveys or e-billing services) and
- Important pricing and strategy decisions enterprise-wide or engagement-by-engagement.
In the Platform, all hourly rates, hours and fees for each individual attorney are cited as to the source. For example, the citation from a court filing includes Case Name, Case Number, Court, Case Filing Date, Filing Number, Filing Description, Attorney and Support Staff listed by Full Name, Client Name, hourly rate of each Timekeeper, hours billed, total hours and the time period in which the work was performed. As mentioned, further secondary research is required to confirm experience levels (graduation and bar licensure years), bar state (in the United States) or bar region, province and / or country, practice area(s) and primary industry of the client.
In order to provide this detailed level of clarity and transparency, the Platform processes and uploads public disclosure documents identified in:
- United States Federal Courts including the Supreme Court of the United States, Court of Appeals (including the Federal Circuit), District, Bankruptcy, Adversary Proceedings, Tax Court and Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB)
- Legal services engagement letters and budgets from municipalities, districts (school, water, environmental and others), counties and states where attorneys were hired and / or budgeted to perform legal work for the public entity for a specific period time or for a specific engagement
- Federal Department, Commission and Agency Registrations such the Security Exchange Commission (SEC)
- Government affairs fees
Since Valeo researches, reviews and analyzes only publicly available information and cites the source of the information, the United States federal and state court systems easily recognize and accept the validity and veracity of Valeo data in court. Valeo data has been used and cited in 200 United States federal and state court cases - with total fees awarded of over $200 Million - including the Supreme Court of the United States (Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley Publishing), Federal District Courts (The United States v. Apple), Appellate Courts including the Federal Circuit, Federal Bankruptcy (AMR Corporation, Chapter 11 bankruptcy case) and Adversary proceedings and major United States state courts. Additionally, Valeo data has been utilized in private arbitrations such JAMS and AAA.
