The total market value includes spinal, neurosurgery, MIS (minimally invasive surgery), radiosurgery, catheter and orthopedic robotic assisted systems. The market is currently dominated by Intuitive Surgical, but has seen strong growth on the part of smaller companies such as Medtech and Mazor Robotics. In addition to the release of several new systems, the market has also seen acquisitions of robotics companies by larger, more established implant firms with whom previous partnerships existed. This has contributed to strong overall growth.

The market is expected to increase considerably over the forecast period as system sales increase in other markets than MIS, and revenue from procedures, maintenance and services increases as a result of the larger installed base. Orthopedic robotic systems, comprising the robotic assisted orthopedic surgery market, have been around since 1982 with the release of the ROBODOC®. More recently, the use of tactile and passive robotic systems for orthopedic procedures, specifically partial knee arthroplasty (PKA, also called unicompartmental knee reconstruction), have become more common.

These robotic systems have addressed the usual problems that arise from performing conventional PKA. Additionally, some of these systems have software for total hip arthroplasty. Currently, this market is composed mainly of one system. But, over the forecast period, the entrance of new competitors will result in further unit sales growth and growth of the overall market. In addition, both existing and new competitors are looking at total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures as an avenue for significant expansion and growth, with two companies intending to market this application in 2017.
