Truvada is a prescription medication used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs to treat HIV/AIDS. It is a combination of two drugs, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine, which work together to reduce the amount of HIV in the body. Truvada is also used as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of HIV infection in people who are at high risk of contracting the virus. PrEP is a daily pill that is taken to prevent HIV infection before exposure to the virus. Truvada is manufactured by Gilead Sciences, Inc., and is available in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
