Changing the game: Toy retailers strive to adapt to the new technological landscape, like by using toy influencers

Toy Retailing in the UK

Over the five years through 2022-23, toy retailers' revenue is set to inch downwards at a compound annual rate of 0.3% to £2.1 billion. At the same time, profit has been eroded by high competition from online-only retailers, big-box stores, supermarkets and video games (which pull away children's attention). Other challenges – like rising inflationary pressures and the high cost of importing goods, especially from China – have also eaten away at profit. The imbalance in negotiating power between small and big toy retailers means that profit is often higher for prominent retailers that can get lower wholesale prices (think Smyths, The Entertainer).

Companies in this industry retail toys in physical stores and often operate through online portals. Businesses that concentrate on selling video game consoles and software and online-only businesses that sell toys on the internet are not included in this industry. Supermarkets and department stores that sell toys are also excluded.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
