These cables have the capacity to accommodate 2,000 fiber cables in a diameter less than one. By rolling out such products, vendors are focusing on improving the utility of the product, optimizing the product’s specifications to make them better and cheaper. Vendors such as Huawei and Cisco have started developing such cables and expanding their offerings in the market.”

According to the report, one driver in market is high demand for data centers. Optical networking is the core of storage area networking and business connectivity solutions. Traditionally, data centers made use of network resources and technology made available to them. However, a rise in the investments in data centers is pushing the demand for new optical modules to meet the demand for high bandwidth, low power, and wider reach. Modern data centers now transfer data at the rates of 10GB or higher. Maintaining such rates of data transfer is increasingly becoming a challenge for copper wire-based electrical interconnects.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is limited spectral efficiency in optical fiber network. In order to make effective use of optical fiber infrastructure, WDM systems pack maximum optical signals onto an optical fiber, i.e., into the limited bandwidth of optical amplifiers placed next to the transmission link. This leads to limitations in spectral efficiency transmitted over fiber. Kerr nonlinearities and amplification noise lead to several types of signal distortions and technical imperfections of optical amplifiers and transponders, further leading to performance limits of the optical network.
