Vacuum trucks are equipped with heavy-duty industrial vacuum units and are designed to vacuum liquid or particles from a site and transport the load for disposal or re-use. Vacuum tank truck/bodies which transport hazardous liquids are required to conform to specifications and codes established by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The report covers four key types of coded vacuum truck/bodies: hydro excavators, industrial vacuum loaders, combination sewer cleaners, and coded vacuum tank truck/bodies.

These types of vacuum truck/bodies have higher entry barriers as compared to the non-coded variants, on account of superior technical requirements and higher safety standards required at manufacturing facilities. Because of overlap in manufacturing capabilities of these more sophisticated vacuum products, companies in one of these segments offer all or most of the other high-end vacuum body types.

Increased drilling activity since 2010 resulted in a surge in demand for coded vacuum tanks, hydro excavators and to some extent, vacuum loaders. Demand for these vacuum tank truck/bodies has been subdued since mid-2014 due to a downturn in fracking activities and was mainly restricted to replacements until end-2016. However, in the last couple of years, the decline in oil/gas drilling applications has been offset to some extent by the improvement in construction activities and the general economy, resulting in healthy demand for hydro excavators from the utility sector, and also for sewer cleaners.
