The bioplastics packaging market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.93% over the forecast period (2021-2026). According to the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI), Bioplastics Council defines bioplastics as a plastic that is biodegradable, has biobased content, or both. Bioplastics materials consist of materials with differing properties. The three main groups are Bio-based, non-biodegradable materials, such as bio-PE, bio-PET, and bio-PEF, Bio-based and biodegradable materials, such as PLA, PHA or starch blends, Fossil-based and biodegradable materials.
  • The significant factors that propel the shift towards such products are the drive for conserving fossil fuel reserves, such as oil and natural gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, and reducing the amount of organic waste, like food and yard debris, going to disposal.
  • In 2019, according to the European Bioplastics.org, global production capacities of bioplastics amounted to about 2.11 million tons, with more than 53% of the volume destined for the packaging market. Such instances indicate that the players across various end-user industries are increasingly adopting the bioplastics.
  • The bio-plastic products are usually made of renewable raw materials, such as starch and cellulose. Moreover, bio-degradable plastic can decompose into inorganic compounds, CO2, methane, and water, by the enzymatic action of microorganisms.
  • In November 2019, Tetra Pak, in collaboration with Braskem, launched its First sustainably sourced bioplastic packaging. The companies providing such solutions have successfully sourced plant-based polymers using the Bonsucro standards for sustainable sugar cane.
  • The increasing initiatives by the government and the related regulatory bodies to promote bioplastics usage is expected to boost market growth over the forecast period. For instance, in May 2019, Japan unveiled a new policy to increase the use of plant-based bioplastics to tackle marine plastic waste. In a move that would see the country to recycle 100% of newly produced plastics by 2035 and promote the use of bioplastics from plant-based sources.
  • Initiatives taken by the players in the field of innovation or adoption strategies related to bioplastics packaging are expected to act as a significant driver for the market. For instance, in May 2019, scientists at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) created a bioplastic for food packaging that decomposes in a compost bin in a couple of years.
Key Market Trends

Rigid Packaging to Hold Dominant Position in the Market
  • Rigid bioplastics are used for cosmetics packaging of compact powders, lipsticks, and creams, as well as beverage bottles. A broad application base increases the scope for demand. Materials, such as bio-based PE, PLA, or bio-based PET, are used in this section.
  • Several well-known brands, such as Vittel, Coca-Cola, Heinz, or Volvic, use bio-based PET for making bottles of all sizes comprising sparkling drinks and other non-gaseous fluids and solutions. Major companies, like Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble, rely on bio-based PE to package several cosmetic products.
  • Moreover, in January 2019, Coca-Cola announced plans to open the company’s PlantBottle IP that is made partially from plants. It has enabled the company to reduce the dependence on non-renewable resource - petroleum to competitors in the beverage industry.
  • The significant percentage of bio-based material in these products and the capability to combine them with suitable recyclates from conventional PE and PET have resulted in a decisive growth in resource efficiency and a decrease in carbon dioxide releases.
  • As a potentially instinctively recyclable material, PLA is also achieving market share in the rigid packaging segment. With the rising volumes, a distinct recycling stream will become economically feasible, and the beneficial and advantageous environmental potential of PLA will be further augmented.
Europe Holds the Maximum Market Share
  • The consumers in the region are increasingly becoming aware of the effect of plastic & non-biodegradable packaging on the environment. The demand for green packaging, including bioplastics packaging, is on the rise in the country.
  • According to european-bioplastics.org, in Europe, 50% of goods are being packaged in plastic that impacts the environment on a large scale. Therefore, the government and the related regulatory bodies are increasingly coming up with initiatives that promote and incentivize the use of bioplastics for packaging in the region.
  • In July 2019, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) announced a EUR 60 million government investment to boost research and development (R&D) accompanied by an expected EUR 149 million from businesses. In a move that would see the development of new forms of packaging made from plants, wood chippings, and food waste, reducing the carbon impact associated with oil-based plastics. The government’s objective of transitioning from a fossil-based economy to a bio-economy would fuel the adoption of the bioplastics in the region over the forecast period.
  • In 2019, according to the European bioplastics, retailers across the region such as Rossmann, Aldi, Coop, and Carrefour were using single or multi-use carrier bags made from bioplastics. Such instances are indicative of the fact that the market is poised to grow over the forecast period. The market in the region is witnessing increasing investments by the players in the region. In December 2019, Stora Enso invested EUR 9 million to build a pilot facility for enabling the production of bio-based plastics as a barrier in transparent packaging.
  • Similarly, in November 2019, Novamont announced a ten million-euro investment program, as part of the expansion and diversification of its production plant in Terni (Italy). This would see the production of fifth-generation MATER-BI (biodegradable and compostable bioplastics) and a series of products with oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties for the food packaging sector.
Competitive Landscape

The bioplastics packaging market consists of several major players. The major players with a prominent share in the market are focusing on expanding their customer base across the regions and the end-user industry base. These companies are leveraging on strategic collaborative initiatives, to increase their market share and increase their profitability. Some of the recent developments in the market are:
  • In June 2020 - BASF SE expands its packaging coatings production to South China. The expansion will complement the production capacities in Shanghai, which primarily serve the market in the East China region. The move will support the fast-growing packaging industry in South China and help customers reduce lead-times by offering proximity between production and point of use. This also reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions due to the shorter transportation distance.
  • In May 2020 - Toray Industries, Inc., announced that it has created a high tensile modulus carbon fiber and thermoplastic pellets that are ideal for injection molding employing that fiber. The pellets can enable the efficient production of complex, rigid parts that are also light, thereby lowering environmental impact. These advances could greatly enhance cost performance.
