Asia is the region with the largest catch and aquiculture production in the world due to its long coastline, dense river system and especially the Government's encouragement. In 2016 Asia accounted for 38.9% of the total export value of the global fishery industry. In particular, China was the country which exported the highest value in the region.

With a long coastline, territorial waters and extensive economic privileges as well as high biodiversity, Vietnam has the advantages to become a leading fishery producer and exporter in the region. In 2018, the exploited fishery output was estimated to increase by 5.3% compared to the previous year, the estimated aquaculture production was at 4,153.8 thousand tons.

In 2018, total seafood export value was estimated to increase by 5.8% compared to 2017 as shrimp supply in some producing countries and in the main import market lessened, which brought opportunities for Vietnamese shrimp to boost the export value . Besides, the exports of tuna, squid, octopus and other fishery increased more strongly in the second quarter, contributing significantly to the dramatic increase of the total value of fishery exports in the first nine months of the year.

The fishery processing industry has so far developed into a key economic industry, which is a large commodity production industry leading in international economic integration. In addition, it not only makes positive contribution to the transformation of agricultural and rural economic structure but to hunger eradication and poverty alleviation, leading to the improvement of community life.
