China Coal Mining to 2023

Summary

The 'China Coal Mining to 2023' provides a comprehensive coverage on China's coal industry. It provides reserves, production by type and grade, consumption by end-use to 2023, and imports. The report also includes a demand drivers section providing information on factors that are affecting the coal industry in China, profiles of major coal producers, information on the major active, planned and exploration projects and regulations governing the industry.

China produced 3.5bnt of coal in 2018 and stood as the world’s largest producer. Of the total coal produced, 82.6% was of bituminous grade, followed by anthracite with 11.8% share and lignite accounting for the remaining 5.6%. The production was mainly supported by nearly 194Mt of new coal mining capacity added during 2018. With this, China's annual coal mining capacity reached over 3.5bnt in that year, versus 3.3bnt in 2017. Over the forecast period (2019-2023), the country’s coal production is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.3% to reach 4bnt in 2023. Simultaneously, China's consumption will grow at a CAGR of 1.8% to reach 4.3bnt in 2023, driven by rising demand from the domestic power and steel industries - which are both undergoing capacity expansion. As a result, China's coal imports are expected to reach 310.7Mt by 2023 versus 281.5Mt in 2018.
