Scope

  • IPS was launched by the National Bank of Kazakhstan (the country's central bank) in June 2022. The service facilitates instant fund transfers between accounts at participating banks and financial institutions in Kazakhstan within seconds. This system allows users to make instant fund transfers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It allows P2P, consumer-to-business, and business-to-business transfers, and non-cash payments via QR code and payment by request. As of July 2023, seven banks support IPS. As of June 2023, the maximum limit for P2P transfers is KZT500,000 ($1,080.86). The country's previous instant payment system, Sunqar, only allowed fund transfers via mobile phone numbers
  • Kazakhstan consumers are increasingly embracing electronic payments via contactless cards, mobile NFC, and QR codes. According to the central bank's 2022 Economic Review report, in H1 2021, Kazakhstan consumers made 18.8 million transactions worth KZT104 billion ($224.8 million) via Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. As per the same report, consumers made 192.8 million QR code payments worth KZT1.3 trillion ($2.8 billion) in H1 2021. According to the latest National Payment System Statistics report published in July 2023, consumers made 473.7 million QR code transactions worth KZT2.2 trillion ($4.8 billion) during H1 2023
  • Various initiatives have been introduced to boost ecommerce. In June 2022, the EU and the International Trade Centre partnered with QazTrade's Trade Policy Development Center and the Union of Artisans of Kazakhstan to launch the Ready4Trade Central Asia training program. This program helped train retailers to sell products online. Meanwhile, to encourage the shift towards online purchasing, in September 2022, Mastercard partnered with the Ministry of Trade and Integration to conduct educational webinars for SMEs on digital marketing and electronic payments. More than 2,000 SMEs had been provided training as of June 2023
