Frequency modulation is possible with a variety of PLL frequency synthesizers. The modulating signal is fed into the output of the loop filter, which alters the frequency of the VCO and synthesizer output directly. Any frequency division can diminish the amplitude of the modulation at the phase comparator output. Any spectral elements in the modulating signal that are too small to be filtered by the loop filter return to the VCO input with the polarity opposite that of the modulating signal, canceling them out. Modulation components that are higher than the loop filter bandpass frequency are unable to return to the VCO input and hence remain in the VCO output. As a result, this simple system cannot handle low frequency directly, or DC, modulating signals, although this is not an issue in the various AC-integrated audio and video FM transmitters that employ it. Such signals can also be stored on a subcarrier above the PLL loop filter's cutoff frequency.

Frequency converters are utilized to convert electricity between different distribution standards and to manage the speed and torque of AC motors. The common frequency converter in this application is a three-phase two-level voltage source inverter. Power semiconductor switches along with a Pulse Width Modulation system are used to manage the phase voltages. To connect all motor stages to the negative or positive dc-link voltage, semiconductor switching systems and anti-parallel linked freewheeling diodes are integrated to produce a bridge. The Pulse Width Modulation modifies the phase connections between the negative and positive DC-link voltages, resulting in a wave voltage with the desired frequency. Pumps and fans are frequently controlled with frequency converters. Various applications save a significant amount of energy as well as electricity
