Fresh ground coffee pods remained the fastest-growing subcategory in 2016, with off-trade increases of 12% in volume terms and 7% in current value terms. However, these growth rates were well below the respective review period CAGRs. While 12% retail volume sales growth in any multi-billion US dollar category is impressive, the volume sales gain of fresh ground coffee pods between 2015 and 2016 reached 8,000 tonnes, which was around one third of the gain in 2013, when coffee pod growth peaked.

Competitive Landscape

In 2016, Keurig Green Mountain led coffee in terms of retail value sales for a fourth consecutive year. The company’s retail value sales topped USD3 billion to account for a 23% share, unchanged from 2015. The overwhelming majority of Keurig Green Mountain’s off-trade sales stemmed from its stake in fresh ground coffee pods, of which the company licenses a wide variety of popular brands for use in its K-Cup machines.

Prospects

Consumers are anticipated to slowly transition their coffee consumption towards on-trade establishments. Coffee is expected to see a slight fall in off-trade volume sales over the forecast period while seeing a 1% on-trade volume CAGR. Between 2016 and 2021, an additional 10,000 tonnes of coffee are set to be sold in the on-trade channel, almost offsetting the estimated decline of 11,000 tonnes in off-trade sales.
