Scope

  • The Italian government and the central bank are promoting electronic payments. The government developed the Progetto Italia Cashless plan, which aims to promote digital payments and reduce the use of cash payments. As part of this plan, the government will reduce the cash payment transaction limit from EUR2,000 ($2,275.30) to EUR1,000 ($1,137.65) from January 2023. This will help limit consumers' dependence on cash while promoting electronic card payments
  • In January 2022, payments giant Worldline acquired an 80% stake in bank acquirer Axepta BNP Paribas. This represents a significant step by Worldline to increase its presence in the country. Axepta BNP Paribas is one of the largest acquirers in Italy, with 239.8 million merchant acquiring transactions in 2021 according to the publisher's Merchant Acquiring Analytics. Meanwhile, to maintain its dominant position in Italy and strengthen its presence in Europe, Nexi entered into a merger agreement with Denmark-based merchant acquirer Nets in July 2021 to become one of the leading merchant acquirers in Europe
  • Digital-only banks are helping boost debit card holding in the country. In January 2018, UniCredit introduced Buddybank in Italy. As of December 2021, the bank had attracted over 200,000 customers, 80% of whom are between 18 and 35 years old. The bank offers accounts, credit and debit cards, as well as a 24/7 concierge service. Meanwhile, in December 2021, UK-based digital-only bank Revolut launched in the country. It offers Standard, Plus, Premium, and Metal accounts along with Mastercard debit cards
