Due to the current metaverse winter, the metaverse theme's weighting in the thematic screen of the publisher's social media sector scorecard has been reduced from 10% to 5%. Conversely, we have increased the weighting for regulation from 10% to 15%, given the upcoming EU regulation targeting social media. In particular, the Digital Services Act imposes extra obligations on very large online platforms (VLOPs) to tackle hate speech and disinformation online. In April, the European Commission designated 18 VLOPs, including Meta, Twitter, Google, and TikTok. All feature in the social media sector scorecard.

Key Highlights

Microsoft and Alphabet have the most at stake in the current race for dominance in generative AI. Both have heavily invested in AI and possess the huge computing power required to train the largest AI models. Both are also increasingly the targets of regulators. Microsoft finds itself in the regulators' crosshairs over its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard and its growing strength in cloud computing. Alphabet's adtech and data-related practices fall under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and the online search giant is already under antitrust investigation in the EU and US due to its ad business. Like Amazon and Alibaba, it scores 1 out of 5 for the regulation theme.
