Chocolate confectionery only grew by 2% in retail current value sales in 2016, a reduced rate compared to 6% in 2015. Ferrero chocolate is well established in Hong Kong specialising in premium gift products. Its sales peak at Chinese New Year and other Chinese holidays. The demand from both the local population and mainland tourists is high for products with gifting purposes. However, from the end of 2015, the consumption of luxury products from mainland China greatly decreased. Starting in 2015, the Hong Kong Government implemented one trip per week to restrict mainland Chinese visiting Hong Kong. This was because the number of mainland tourists has been too overwhelming towards the end of the review period with complaints from the local population. In addition, during the same year, the central government in China implemented stricter anti-corruption policies, and thus greatly reduced the demand for gifting. All of these factors have had a negative impact on chocolate confectionery during 2016.

Competitive Landscape

Ferrero Asia Ltd is set to remain as the leading player in chocolate confectionery with a value share of 45% in 2016. However, its share is predicted to diminish from 46% in 2015. This is due to a downturn in sales for Ferrero Rocher and related products due to current market trends. However, the company will continue to dominate chocolate with toys and premium chocolate.

Prospects

Chocolate confectionery is predicted to record flat value growth at constant 2016 prices over the forecast period, while it will record a volume CAGR of 2%. This will mostly be due to the over saturation of chocolate with toys in Hong Kong. Due to the expectation of long-lasting negative impacts, mainland Chinese consumption in Hong Kong will be reduced over the forecast period.
